Apple has announced plans to make its own microchips for Mac computers, a long-rumoured shift that tightens the tech giant's control of its own products and ends a 15-year-relationship with Intel.
Tim Cook, Apple's chief executive, called the announcement a “historic day for the Mac”, saying it would start selling computers with custom chips later this year.
The new chips will be designed by Apple, but rely on processor architecture developed by Cambridge-based Arm, whose designs are already used in Apple's iPhones and iPads.
