A Video Message from Her Excellency the Right Honourable Julie Payette, Governor General of Canada, to the 2020 Graduates
June 18, 2020
Hello to all of you. My name is Julie Payette and I am the Governor General of Canada.
I am here with you today because you have achieved a most important milestone: the completion of your high school diploma, and because I would like to join your parents and your teachers in cheering you on this very special day.
Congratulations to the graduating Class of 2020! Well done!
Graduation is one of the most exciting times in a student’s life. It is when it all comes together. When you can pat yourself on the back and say “mission accomplished” before heading off into the next phase in your life.
But this year, things are different. COVID-19 has changed everything. It has forced you out of school and away from your friends. And the celebrations you anticipated cannot take place like they normally would.
Yet, despite thee hardship and the uncertainty, you rose to the challenge and you found creative ways to remain connected. You finished your classes online and you made the best out of a difficult situation. You should be very proud of yourself.
No matter what path you decide to follow from now, I want you to know that the future of this country belongs to you. You are the ones that will shape the years to come. Get involved in your community and in society. Stay open to new ideas, look after others, especially those who are less fortunate, and take care of the planet. Have passion, vision, and opinions.
There is nothing you cannot do if you put your mind to it and are willing to put some effort into it. As a former astronaut, you can trust me on this one: The sky is not the limit! Be all you can be. Best of success in your future endeavours!
