Section A
Directions: In this section, you will hear two long conversations.
At the end of each conversation, you will hear some questions.
Both the conversation and the questions will be spoken only once.
After you hear a question,
you must choose the best answer from the four choices
marked A), B), C) and D).
Then mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 1
with a single line through the centre.
Conversation One
M: Have you ever used any of the services
offered by the Career Services Center?
W: I've never logged on to any of the e-fairs,
but I have used the career mentoring program.
It's great!
I've been talking to this cool counselor at the Career Center,
and he thinks I would be great in statistics or accounting.
M: Oh yeah? How does he know that?
W: He gave me a couple of tests to measure my interests and abilities.
Then, he asked me lots of questions about the type of student I am,
and what kind of lifestyle I want to have after I graduate.
Then, he ran a computer cross-check
that showed my skills and interests
were most closely related to students
who have majored in statistics and accounting.
M: But what about finding a job when you graduate?
W: The Career Center also has a huge research database.
The counselor told me there'll be lots of jobs
in those two fields over the next 10 years.
M: It sounds good,
but what if you declare one of those majors and then don't like it?
W: Well, the center can help me find an internship next summer.
I can do volunteer work for a company in my major and see if I like it.
If I don't, I can change my major.
The counselor said the center will be glad to help me with that.
It's a great place.
You should check it out!
M: Yes, it sounds pretty cool.
Can I just stop by their office and ask for help?
W: Well, I think you should call them to make an appointment first.
M: OK. I guess I will do that this afternoon.
Questions 1 to 4 are based on the conversation you have just heard.
1. What do we learn about the woman from the conversation?
2. What did the counselor tell the woman
about jobs in the fields of statistics and accounting?
3. What will the center do to help the woman
to see if she likes the major or not?
4. What will the man probably do next?
Conversation Two
W: Hey, Tom!
I heard that you are auditing at the history class.
How do you like it?
M: Pretty good!
Prof. Lincoln talked a lot about Africa yesterday.
Do you know which African country has the strongest economy?
W: I would guess South Africa.
It's probably got the most modern infrastructure
of all the African countries.
M: Exactly!
And Prof. Lincoln said that it is one of the most stable democracies
in that part of the world.
W: Sounds interesting.
What else did Prof. Lincoln say?
M: As developed as it is now,
that's not to say that there haven't been problems.
I bet you can guess what I'm referring to.
W: Apartheid?
M: Yes, under apartheid,
the government maintained
a policy of separating the white minority
and the black majority.
Early on, black people were barred
from being members of parliament.
It was a whites-only government.
W: Does everyone speak English in South Africa?
M: No, not necessarily.
Most people do, but there are actually eleven official languages.
English is one.
The most commonly spoken language
that's native to the area would be Zulu.
W: And... and how about the population there?
M: Interestingly,
South Africa has the largest population
of people of European descent in Africa,
and the largest Indian population outside of Asia.
Not only that, it also has the largest mixed race community in Africa.
W: Oh, you really know a lot about that country now!
I guess I want to audit at the history class next semester.
M: I bet you won't regret it.
Questions 5 to 8 are based on the conversation you have just heard.
5. According to the conversation, what is the situation about South Africa?
6. What does the man say about the black people under apartheid?
7. What is the most commonly spoken language in South Africa?
8. What can we learn about South Africa from the conversation?
Section B
Directions: In this section, you will hear two passages.
At the end of each passage, you will hear some questions.
Both the passage and the questions will be spoken only once.
After you hear a question,
you must choose the best answer from the four choices
marked A), B), C) and D).
Then mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 1
with a single line through the centre.
Passage One
At first, most Americans didn't think
there was anything particularly special about the White House.
Few had ever seen it or had any idea what it looked like,
and even the families who lived there found it completely inadequate.
When it was built, the White House
was the largest house in the country
and it remained so until after the Civil War.
But it served so many different purposes
that little of it was available for First Family to actually live in.
The first floor, or "State Floor,"
was made up entirely of public rooms;
and the president's offices,
which were staffed by as many as 30 employees,
took half of the second floor.
The First Family had to get by
with the eight or fewer second-floor rooms that were left.
By Lincoln's time,
the situation was intolerable.
The White House was open to visitors;
office seekers, cranks, and the merely curious had no difficulty
making their way upstairs to the official rooms from the first floor.
Lincoln was so uncomfortable with the situation
that he had a private corridor constructed.
He also received a $20,000 appropriation
to improve the furnishings of the White House.
The new furnishings did not last for more than a few years.
When Lincoln was assassinated in 1865,
the White House fell into disarray.
No one really supervised the White House
during the first five weeks.
Mrs. Lincoln laid mourning in her room,
and vandals helped themselves.
Questions 9 to 11 are based on the passage you have just heard.
9. How did Americans feel towards the White House in the beginning?
10. Why was the situation intolerable during Lincoln's time?
11. What happened after the White House was refurbished
according to the speaker?
Passage Two
We think of aerobics as being a high impact activity
but actually aerobic exercise by definition
means we practice the same large muscle group,
rhythmically, for a period of 15 to 20 minutes or longer
while maintaining 60-80% of your maximum heart rate.
Think of aerobic activity
as being long in duration yet low in intensity.
You should be able to carry on a short conversation
while doing aerobic exercise.
Aerobic exercise conditions the heart and lungs
by increasing the oxygen available to the body
and by enabling the heart to use oxygen more efficiently.
The aerobic curve occurs when you begin exercising,
increase your intensity level,
hit the high point and gradually decrease your intensity level.
The goal when exercising aerobically
is to hit your target heart rate
and maintain it for the entire exercise session.
This works the heart muscle more effectively
and burns more calories.
You start, hit your target zone,
then you maintain your pace until the cool down.
As your heart becomes conditioned,
you will have to work harder to reach the target zone.
If you are too tired to continue exercising in an aerobic class,
march in place for a while until you can resume exercising.
It is not OK to stop in the middle of an aerobic class
because your body is sending extra blood to the muscles.
Stopping suddenly can lead to muscle cramping and dizziness.
Questions 12 to 15 are based on the passage you have just heard.
12. What do we know about aerobics from the passage?
13. What will happen when we are doing aerobic exercises?
14. What is the goal of aerobics according to the speaker?
15. What does the speaker suggest we do
when we are tired in an aerobic class?
Section C
Directions: In this section, you will hear recordings of lectures or talks
followed by some questions.
The recordings will be played only once.
After you hear a question,
you must choose the best answer from the four choices
marked A), B), C) and D).
Then mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 1
with a single line through the centre.
Now listen to the following recording and answer questions 16 to 19.
Dear Students,
Time flies when you're having fun.
Enrolment is nearly over
and now it is time to get down to some business.
Induction week is the beginning of your course.
Your induction will include
which modules you will be studying in what year,
an overview of optional modules
which can be picked in the second and third years,
an overview of your timetable and an overview of helpful websites.
So as you can see,
there will be a lot to cover from the lecturers.
But as a student, you're wondering when the fun starts.
It can happen in these induction classes
as you begin to meet new friends
and begin to explore the university,
but where do you start?
You've had a letter.
All students enrolling this week have been given a letter
stating where they will need to be next week.
Ensure you know where your induction is
as it could be in any of our three buildings,
Summer Row, McIntyre House and Richmond House
and ensure you also have plenty of time to get to your destination.
Begin to study and scan the class.
Find friends for life or study partners.
The importance of this step is crucial.
University is a confusing place
which is filled with different people
with different aspirations and objectives.
Friends and study partners should stay well clear of each other
and don't be in a group assignment with party animals.
Trust me, it does not end well.
Talk to older students.
Students who are in their second and third years
have already had their first-year experience
and would be able to tell you freshmen
what they feel their mistakes were,
what they would have done less of,
what they would have done more of.
Having a mentor-type person looking over you
really does enhance your university experience.
Explore University.
You've all probably been here for an open day
and explored the University already
but no one is holding you back from exploring yourself.
University College Birmingham has a gym,
a spa, two restaurants, a resource centre, two libraries,
countless computer rooms and workspaces etc.
It's your duty to explore...
Enjoy. It seems to be the conclusion to everything I say,
but enjoyment is a very important attribute to consider.
You've just invested nearly 27,000 pounds
and three years of your life into university,
so you may as well enjoy it and if you don't,
notify somebody and don't stay quiet.
I'm sure the problem can be rectified.
To all the new inductees:
I hope your time here is filled with excitement and adventure.
To all returning students,
I hope you've had a great summer break
and ready to get into the partying and studying mood again.
16. What will begin after the enrolment is over?
17. What is stated in the letter given to every new student?
18. How can a freshman enhance his or her university experience?
19. What can students do if they don't enjoy the university life?
Now listen to the following recording and answer questions 20 to 22.
How much water should you drink each day?
It's a simple question with no easy answers.
Studies have produced varying recommendations over the years,
but in truth,
your water needs depend on many factors,
including your health,
how active you are and where you live.
Although no single formula fits everyone,
knowing more about your body's need for fluids
will help you estimate how much water to drink each day.
Water is your body's principal chemical component
and makes up about 60 percent of your body weight.
Every system in your body depends on water.
For example,
water flushes toxins out of vital organs,
carries nutrients to your cells
and provides a moist environment for ear, nose and throat tissues.
Lack of water can lead to dehydration,
a condition that occurs
when you don't have enough water in your body
to carry out normal functions.
Even mild dehydration can drain your energy and make you tired.
Every day you must replenish its water supply
by consuming drinks and foods that contain water.
So how much water does an average, healthy adult
living in a temperate climate need?
In general, doctors recommend 8 or 9 cups.
Here are the most common ways of calculating that amount:
First, eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day.
Another approach to water intake is the "8 × 8 rule"-
drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day.
The rule could also be stated,
"Drink eight 8-ounce glasses of fluid a day,"
as all fluids count toward the daily total.
Although the approach really isn't supported by scientific evidence,
many people use this easy-to-remember rule
as a guideline for how much water and other fluids to drink.
Second, dietary recommendations.
The Institute of Medicine advises
that men consume roughly 3 liters of total drinks a day
and women consume 2.2 liters of total drinks a day.
Even apart from the above approaches,
if you drink enough fluid
so that you rarely feel thirsty
and produce 1.5 liters or more of colorless or slightly yellow urine a day,
your fluid intake is probably adequate.
If you're concerned about your fluid intake,
check with your doctor or a registered dietitian.
He or she can help you determine the amount of water that's best for you.
20. What can help people estimate their water needs every day?
21. What condition can mild lack of water lead to?
22. What can people do if they are concerned about their fluid intake?
Now listen to the following recording and answer questions 23 to 25.
Good morning, ladies and gentlemen,
and thank you Mr. Chairman for that kind introduction.
This morning I'm here to share some thoughts about our industry-
the insurance.
It is the job of insurance to reduce or remove risks.
And that's something today's businesses need.
In a world where new risks seem to be created out of thin air every day,
businesses must be able to reduce their risks-
otherwise no one will ever want to invest or take a risk again.
How do we respond to a situation where our customers want us,
but in which all our thinking and planning was just the opposite?
How do we respond to a world that looks the same,
in which people continue to go about their daily business,
their ordinary lives as we insist on calling them,
but a world which feels tangibly different...
a world in which a new mood now prevails.
The world is different-we now need to behave differently.
And that's the challenge before the insurance industry today.
Then how differently?
Well to try to give you some of the answers,
I want to cover three main points this morning.
First, I want to take a critical look at
some of the trends and pressures
affecting the US and world markets over the last year.
You'll be familiar with many of these individually,
but it's when we look at them collectively-
when we see the pattern they form-
that it becomes clear we're now operating in unknown-
and perhaps dangerous-waters.
All of this, I believe,
has a great deal of impact on our current thinking
about the so-called "insurance cycle".
Next, I want to put forward the response
which I believe we need to make as an industry
to this new insurance environment.
Finally, I want to share with you
how the company is taking control of its own destiny
and will no longer allow external forces
such as the insurance cycle to drive it
in a direction it no longer wishes to travel.
So let's begin by looking at the state of the insurance industry
and the economy last year and think about what all of this means
for the insurance cycle.
23. What do today's companies need according to the speaker?
24. What is the challenge of the insurance industry?
25. What is the insurance company thinking about
by studying market trends and economy?
This is the end of Listening Comprehension.
