with subscription content from media partners
like The Washington Post and Vogue.
The Notify app lets users subscribe to content
from media partners on their smart phones.
Facebook will be able to add news alerts in its daily notifications

Ariadna Gutierrez Arevalo,
as the new Miss Universe.
She and Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach of Philippines,
who thought she had finished second, hugged.
Arevalo accepted the crown and waved to the crowd,
thinking she was the winner.
Harvey then realized he made a mistake.
“I have to apologize,” he said,
while standing next to Arevalo.
Then he awarded the crown to the real winner.
The crown went to Wurtzbach.
Wurtzbach looked shocked.
Arevalo looked confused.
The audience screamed.
It was an awkward moment for everyone.
Harvey said he misread the card he had been given.
The episode led to a long night of confusion,
hurt feelings and apologies.
"Nobody feels worse than me,”
Harvey told reporters after the show.
Harvey wrote about the mistake on Twitter,
saying,
"I'd like to apologize wholeheartedly to Miss Colombia
and Miss Philippines for my huge mistake.
I feel terrible.”
5. What is the news report mainly about?

Section B
Directions: In this section,
you will hear two long conversations.
At the end of each conversation,

will be spoken only once.
After you hear a question,
you must choose the best answer

Conversation One
M: I am so relieved I just finished the story
I was working on for our creative writing course.
W: I haven't quite finished mine yet.
I had trouble getting past the beginning.
M: How come?
W: Well, I was really happy to be writing a detective story.
But after the first few pages,
I sort of froze up mentally.
I just couldn't write any more.
M: The same thing happened to me.
I thought it meant I lack imagination.
W: Well, Prof. Wilson said it's pretty common for writers
to get stuck like that.
M: You went to talk to her about it?
W: Actually, I went to ask for more time to finish the assignment.
But instead she gave me some advice
about how to keep from getting stalled writing like that.
She said that the first thing I should do
is just write anything that come into my head
even if it doesn't make any sense,
sort of warm up exercise.
M: That's interesting.
When I get stuck,
I shift to something else, you know,
do some work for one of my other courses.
W: Well, her methods seem to have worked for me.
I've written most of the story,
and I should be able to hand it in on time.
But first I need go to the jewelry store.
M: You are going shopping?
Can't you wait until you finish your story?
W: I am going there for my story.
My detective solves a jewelry store robbery.
So I want to take a look at
how the jewelry cases are arranged,
where the security cameras are located,
that sort of thing.
Questions 8 to 11 are based on the conversation you have just heard.
8. What are the speakers talking about?
9. What was the woman’s problem?
10. What did the professor tell the woman to do?
11. Why is the woman going out?
Conversation Two
M: Oh, hi, this book is due today,
and I am not quite finished with it.
Is it possible to get it renewed?
W: Hmmm, French Art & Architecture of the 19th century.
I'll have to check to see if that's possible.
Can I have the book and your library card please?
M: Sure, here you are.
I just need it for a few more days if possible.
W: Well, first of all this book is one week late,
and not due today as you thought.
It appears you have your dates mixed up.
M: Oh. Gosh!
W: There are also a few requests for this book
so it is now on hold for the next person.
Now there's a small fine on your card
of $1.40 for the overdue book,
would you like to pay this today?
M: Umm, so if I pay the fine today,
can I take this book out again?
W: You won't be able to take this book out again
until all the other people who have placed holds on it have signed it out.
Did you want to pay your fine today?
M: Have you already processed the return on the book?
I hope to keep it for a few more days.
I really need it to study.
The exam is in two days
and this is practically the course text book.
W: Sorry, I have already signed it back in
and now the book is on hold.
In fact if I could,
I would triple your fines and suspend your library privileges.
It's not fair to all the other students
who are also trying to access library material for study purpose.
Perhaps you should think of the other people
who also need this book to study.
Now are you going to pay your fine today?
M: OK. Sorry.
Questions 12 to 15 are based on the conversation you have just heard.
12. What is the man’s problem?
13. On what condition can the man have the book again?
14. Why is the book on hold now?
15. What is the man likely to do next?
Section C
Directions: In this section,
you will hear three short passages.
At the end of each passage,
you will hear some questions.
Both the passage and the questions
will be spoken only once.
After you hear a question,
you must choose the best answer from the four choices
marked A), B), C) and D).
Then mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 1
with a single line through the centre.
Passage One
Requesting someone's business card is a straightforward process.
You need only say,
"Do you have a business card?"
or "May I have your business card?"
When you want to present your own card,
you can say,
"Here's my card.
Please feel free to call me if you have any suggestions."
If you wish to offer your card to a long-time associate,
you can say,
"Did I ever give you my card?"
or "I mean to give you my card."
It's not polite to directly refuse a request
from someone for your business card.
Instead, you can say,
"Sorry, but I'm afraid I'm all out at the moment."
or "I neglected to bring them with me."
Giving someone your card, of course,
does not obligate you to continue contact,
nor does accepting someone else's card.
When you do receive a card,
say "Thank you."
and examine it briefly before putting it away.
You can use a business card that you received
to refresh your memory about someone's name and title
before your next meeting.
You can also record notes about the meeting
on the back of the card,
or place it in your card file.
Questions 16 to 18 are based on the passage you have just heard.
16. Which of the following is an impolite behavior
according to the passage?
17. What should we do when accepting a business card?
18. What's the function of a business card according to the passage?
Passage Two
If you are someone who tends to focus on the negative,
thinking positively may be a new skill for you.
One way to keep a positive attitude about yourself
is by writing down and saying several sentences.
The sentences should be strong,
supportive statements about yourself
such as "I am a confident and capable person
who can handle challenges."
It's hard to feel defeated when your self-talk is positive.
Another technique for reducing stress is positive images.
When confronted with a problem,
try to imagine the outcome that you want.
This technique is used by sport professionals
with tremendous success.
You too can champion your cause
by mentally picturing positive results.
Sometimes people are faced
with unfortunate circumstances that can not be changed.
In these instances,
it may help to think about some of the assets and resources
that you have that can support you and help you cope
such as family, friends, skills, education,
money and good health.
Questions 19 to 21 are based on the passage you have just heard.
19. What is mainly discussed in the passage?
20. How can we imagine positively?
21. How should we face the unchangeable misfortune?
Passage Three
A fellow had just been hired
as the new CEO of a large high-tech corporation.
The CEO who was stepping down
met with him privately and presented him
with three numbered envelopes.
"Open these if you run up against a problem
you don't think you can solve," he said.
Well, things went along pretty smoothly,
but six months later,
sales took a decline and he was really under the pressure.
He remembered the envelopes.
He went to his drawer and took out the first envelope.
The message read, "Blame your former CEO."
The new CEO called a press conference
and laid all the faults on the previous CEO.
Satisfied with his comments,
the press responded positively,
sales began to pick up and the problem was soon behind him.
About a year later, the company was again
experiencing serious product problems.
Having learned from his previous experience,
the CEO quickly opened the second envelope.
The message read, "Reorganize".
Then he did,
and the company quickly reorganized.
After several months,
the company once again fell on difficult times.
The CEO went to his office,
closed the door and opened the third envelope.
The message said, "Prepare three envelopes".
Questions 22 to 25 are based on the passage you have just heard.
22. From whom did the new CEO get three envelopes?
23. In the first half year,
how did the business go?
24. What was the message in the first envelope?
25. What did the last envelope mean?
This is the end of Listening Comprehension.
