It is hardly a coincidence that we call the college graduation ceremony a commencement as educators long ago have realized that students were embracing a new chapter in life as they concluded the glories or failures of the foregoing years. Some people may argue that this view of life puts us on a circular and repetitive path, making us always on the go and without let-up. Their retorts are only sound in the superficial sense. To be given the chance to let go of the past and start a new journey is a blessing that enriches us with wisdom and stamina to explore new depths of life and empowers us to take on new adventures. If we allow the achievements or frustrations of a certain period to define us, we would have to trudge forward with heavy emotional burdens, becoming so afraid of falling down from the past that we lose the courage and perspective of a beginner.
The past leads us to where we are today, but it stops there to bid us farewell and exhort us to move forward afresh as curiously as a toddler is making the first steps.
