老外说——聊聊喜欢的书和电影

很多人喜欢看电影，也有很多喜欢人喜欢读书。电影和书都是一种文化载体，都可以使我们从中获得知识，得到娱乐。今天我们就来和这位“老外”聊一聊她喜欢的书和电影。

Gwen

Do you have any book that interests you most? And when you talk about books, you may recommend it to other people. So what kind of a book would that be?

I am a biology teacher at high school, so I love science, and especially nature. I could not put the book down. It was a diary that David Attenborough, you know, the famous naturalist for BBC television, he wrote a book when he was traveling in the 1950s and 1960s, collecting specimens (标本) for London Zoo. As he was doing this, he did a TV series. As he was going, he wrote a diary about what was happening. The first place they went to was in Argentina where they were looking for armadillos （犰狳：美洲动物，体表覆盖角质鳞片的护甲). Then they went to French Diana (1’15 ) in sort of the Caribbean side of South America near Columbia and Brazil, and they got stuck in the jungle for many many days.

The last place he went to was Komodo in Indonesia, and Bali, in Indonesia, looking for the big Komodo dragons. It was fascinating to read the stories. It's travels.

Exactly. It took in 3 weeks to go from Jakarta, to Bali. Now, you can be there within what? A few hours.

Gwen

What is the name of the book? Again?

It is David Attenborough. It was very interesting. If you like history and nature and travel.

Gwen

And talking about movies and series, TV shows. What are you recently watching? And do you have anything to recommend?

I started watching The Mandalorin 《曼达洛人》. The following series of Stars Wars.

Gwen

Is it an animation (动漫)?

No, it's a live action (真人版) one.

Gwen

So you do like Star Wars?

I don't normally, but for some reason, this one is addictive. Do you have a favorite movie or TV series?

Gwen

The movies that I’ve watched so many times, I don't know whether you know them or not, like Annie Hall《安妮·霍尔 》.Do you know? By Woody Allen? Another one by Woody Allen, Hannah and Her Sisters《汉娜姐妹》. And also, The Devil Wears Prada《穿普拉达的》. You know that?

Yes. I haven't watched many Woody Allen films.

Gwen

I almost like all the movies by Woody Allen. What kind of movies do you recommend? Do you like to share?

I like movies where you don't expect the ending.

Gwen

Such as？

Uh, literally just forgotten the name. It was the recent one with Tom Hanks. It's a series of stories. Star 19?

Gwen

Is it a latest movie?

I think 2018, 2019.

Gwen

What is story about?

It is just a collection of stories throughout space and time and history. They all interweave together. Cloud Atlas 《云图》.

Gwen

Yeah, I know that movie.

I love that.

Gwen

You love that? I can barely understand the content. I watched it twice actually.

I too watch it twice as well. But all of the themes are about love and it's overcoming everything. I thought it was very nice, but I would love to read the book.

There apparently is a really good book by a British comedian— David Walliams. He has just written a book. Normally, he writes children's books, but he's written a book about these old, retired people in a nursing home. Every Thursday, they have a mystery club and try and solve old mysteries. It sounds like a really interesting book about the Thursday mystery club.

Gwen

So the name of the book is?

I will have to look it up and find the name of the book. I think it's something like Murder Mystery by David Walliams. It’s a new one and it sounds very good.

Gwen

Do you like Harry Potter series?

Yes. Do you?

Gwen

Yeah, I like the first three movies. Of course, that is the first three books. But for the latter ones, I can't say I like them, but it's just turned darker and darker.

Yes, it has.

Gwen

Which one do you like best? I always like the first one the most.

It’s my least favorite one.

Gwen

So which one do you like best?

I think I like 4th one, The Goblet of Fire《哈利波特与火焰杯》 I think it's becoming more of a story and your understanding, all of the little bits that happen.

Gwen

Do all British people like Harry Potter?

Not so much. I was a child so, they were aimed at my generation. She first wrote Harry Potter in 1997.

Gwen

J.K. Rolling, she does help a whole generation to elevate, develop reading habit.

Exactly. Yes.

Gwen

Maybe she made children, especially British children to actually like reading.

Exactly. Does your son have a favorite book?

Gwen

He likes to read every day before bedtime. He reads all kinds of books, and I can't say there is one that he likes the most. I think he’s still in the process of discovering a favorite book.

You haven't had to read the same book over and over and over?

Gwen

Yeah, you have to read a lot of times to be determined to say that I like this book. It's just like movies. You have watched a movie over 20 times, of course you like it.

My brother’s children. He has a 3.5 and a 1.5-year-old. The older one will make him read the same book every night before bed.

Gwen

Really? What kind of book?

I don't know. It’s one about some polar bears, I don't know. But every time, it’s always the same book. It's not changed.
