[Round-up of Covid-19 Worldwide on Jan. 28th]
There are now over 100.8 million confirmed cases of COVID-19 worldwide with over 2.17 million deaths.
UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced tougher restrictions yesterday to fight the pandemic. He reiterated that the coronavirus lockdown would remain in place until at least March 8th and all travelers arriving from countries at high risk from new coronavirus variants will be forced to quarantine in hotels for 10 days.
More countries have implemented stricter restrictions to prevent the new variants from spreading. Belgium is restricting all non-essential travel before March and Israel has almost completely stopped air traffic since January 25th.
In Asia, Tokyo recorded 973 new confirmed cases yesterday, the first time in two days, it dipped below 1,000. However, the number of severely ill patients has surged from 11 to 159.
International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach reiterated yesterday that the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games will commence on July 23rd as scheduled, even though recent rumors have suggested that the upcoming games may be postponed or even canceled. Bach also said that the Tokyo Olympic Committee will release COVID-19 guidelines early February.
