In this featureDenise starts by talking of Barcelona, the great city on the Mediterranean. Shetalks also of the capital, Madrid. Then of smaller cities such as Segovia andof the wine country.
Today Spainincreasingly attracts Chinese tourists who are also enjoying the scenery, thefood and the historic cities.
Track one
Track two
One of the things in Madrid that I really did love was the San Miguel market
A very famous market in Madrid - a food market - I am not sure how much weight I put on because I really ate my way around Spain
San Miguel market is very famous for all sorts of food - we had lunch there one day - most enjoyable
You make me quite envious - thinking back to my days of ‘Viva Espana’ - we used to sing that song ‘Viva Espana’
(Spain) was a major destination for people from Scotland - to escape the rain, escape the cold - go to Spain and enjoy the sunshine
But you were not just in these big cities like Madrid and Barcelona
You were doing a lot of travelling - right up to Bilbao
From Madrid we headed out into a couple of ancient cities - Segovia was one of those.
While we were there they were advertising a bullfight
Bullfighting in Madrid is generally a ‘no-no’ these days - but in Segovia they were going to have a bullfighting festival
From there we headed into the wine country - into dry areas - reminded me a lot of Mildura in Victoria (Australia) where you have a dry climate but they have canals and a lot of water and so it is very good for the wine
We went to a place called Penedes which is a wine district - many wineries in that area
The Bodegas - you go in - it is the big barrels of wine - you can sit there all day sampling until you decide which one to take a bottle back
A lot of these bodegas are underground - in naturally occurring caves or they dig down
That is very good for wine to keep it cool
They also make cheeses which Denise loved!
