Hi. I would like to say thank you to Rachel Kavanaugh and Alan Strachan, who cast me respectively as the King of Navarre in Love’s Labour’s Lost and Demetrius in A Midsummer Night’s Dream in the 2001 season of lan Talbot’s run Regents Park Open Air Theatre and that was the beginning of my career.
Until then, I’d spent time knocking about from one part-time job to another, mainly in food whether it was in kitchens or catering gigs as a waiter and beginning to lose the faith and hope and worry a lot about my student debt and the fact that I was still living at home.
You gave me an opportunity to begin my career with those fantastic parts, with a phenomenal company of actors.
I was so carried away with the experience but I learnt so much from watching both my peers and my seniors some of whom were very seasoned professionals not only there at the Regent Park Open Air Theatre but also any other theatre in the country that I care to mention, The RSC, The National, Almeida, The Birmingham Rep Liverpool Playhouse, Glasgow Citz, you name it and I was just awestruck.
I learnt so much about how to conduct yourself, about the rigour of a theatre job, the discipline of it and just the sheer of joy of what’s possible in that space, with a live audience and everything that our culture is missing at the moment so that was my lucky break, that was the moment where I felt most helped, right at the beginning of my career.
The Theatre Artists Fund is a much-needed charity, started by Sam Mendes that I am incredibly proud to support and be doing this short video for. It helps with people who are going through a really tough time at the moment, please, please, please, do know that you can reach out to them for a grant.
Sorry I’m just pausing because I imagine a lot of the people I’ve worked with in theatre are in a very difficult predicament at the moment, whether they’re front of house, whether they’re stage door, technicians, stage management, musicians, in the lighting or sound department, things are non-existently tough, as in there is no work at the moment.
Please if you are as fortunate as me or in any other industry that has had good fortune, please can you think of donating whatever you can to this enterprise to keep the lifeblood of theatre which is the people that keep the buildings working, that keep the work possible, that keep the work working, to help them sustain during this incredibly difficult time of unemployment and financial challenges and let’s just hope for a brighter future, that we’re all trying to somehow make.
Thank you for listening, bye.
