All the court was present at the match，and Laertes，by directions of the king，prepared a poisoned weapon.Great wagers were made by the courtiers in the match，because both Hamlet and Laertes were known to excel at sword play.
Hamlet chose a blunted foil，as was the custom for a friendly match.He didn＇t at all suspect the treachery of Laertes，so he didn’ t examine Laertes＇s weapon. Laertes，on the other hand，chose one with a sharp，poisoned point.
At first，Laertes played with Hamlet，making it seem as though he had gained some advantages. At this，the dissembling king magnified and extolled beyond measure, drinking to Hamlet＇s success and wagering rich bets upon the issue.But soon Laertes made a deadly thrust at Hamlet with his poisoned weapon，giving him a mortal blow.
Hamlet，incensed，but unaware of the whole of the treachery，exchanged his own innocent weapon for Laertes＇s deadly one in a scuffle. With a thrust of Laertes’ own sword，Hamlet repaid Laertes，who was this justly caught in his own treachery. At this exact moment，the queen shrieked out that she was poisoned. She had accidentally drunk out of a bowl which the king had prepared for Hamlet.
