Spring Festival travel rush kicks off

2022年春运正式开启

The number of railway passenger trips during China's upcoming Spring Festival travel rush is expected to jump 28.5 percent from the holiday season last year. A total of 280 million railway passenger trips are expected during China's largest annual travel rush, which will last from Jan 17 to Feb 25 this year, according to the China State Railway Group. During the 40-day travel season, also known as chunyun, many Chinese people will travel to meet their families for the Chinese Lunar New Year, which falls on Feb 1 this year. 
2022年春运自1月17日开始，至2月25日结束。国铁集团表示，2022年春运全国铁路预计发送旅客2.8亿人次，同比增长28.5%。春运是我国每年最大的客流高峰，今年的春运将持续40天，许多人会长途旅行去和家人团聚共度春节，今年的春节是2月1日。

Zhu Wenzhong, deputy director of the passenger transport department at China State Railway Group, said the company will strictly prevent overloading by increasing the number of available daily seats to about 10.5 million, an increase of 10 percent compared with 2019. Zhu said it will also extend the service time for online bookings and refunds to 24 hours a day to avoid crowds waiting in lines in stations, which would increase the risk of the virus spreading.
国铁集团客运部副主任朱文忠表示，他们将充分安排运力，严控列车载客率。今年春运每日席位可供给能力最高可以达到1050万左右，较2019年提高10%。将延长互联网售票改签业务办理时间，提供24小时退票服务，避免大量人员在车站内聚集等待，降低疫情传播风险。

China FDI inflows hit record high
2021年实际使用外资规模再创新高

Foreign direct investment into the Chinese mainland, in actual use, expanded 14.9 percent year-on-year to a record high of 1.15 trillion yuan in 2021, the Ministry of Commerce said Thursday. In US dollar terms, the inflow went up 20.2 percent year-on-year to $173.48 billion. High-tech industries saw FDI inflows jump 17.1 percent from a year earlier. Foreign investment in China's high-tech manufacturing and high-tech services industries rose 10.7 and 19.2 percent year-on-year respectively. 商务部1月13日公布的数据显示，2021年，全国实际使用外资金额1.15万亿元人民币，同比增长14.9%(折合1734.8亿美元，同比增长20.2%)。高技术产业实际使用外资同比增长17.1%，其中高技术制造业增长10.7%，高技术服务业增长19.2%。

Investment in the Chinese mainland from countries along the Belt and Road and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations jumped 29.4 and 29 percent respectively. China will further expand its high-level opening-up, enhance its services for foreign-funded firms and projects and make more efforts to optimize the business environment in 2022, ministry spokesperson Shu Jueting told a press briefing.

Climate change in the coming decades could le ad to an increase in cases of kidney stones that would bring huge costs to healthcare systems, according to research by scientists in the United States. A study, published recently in Scientific Reports, found even if measures are put in place to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, there would still be a rise in cases of the painful condition. With this latest study, scientists sought to project how climate change will impact the burden of kidney stone disease on healthcare systems in the future, The Independent reported.

The scientists created a model to estimate the impact of heat on future kidney stone presentations in the southeastern US state of South Carolina, which has a higher incidence of the disease. The model predicted the number of cases will increase between 2.2 and 3.9 percent by the year 2089, depending on projected daily temperatures under two climate change scenarios.

Djokovic loses visa appeal

Tennis star Novak Djokovic has lost his court battle to stay in Australia and compete in the Australian Open. Australia's Federal Court on Sunday dismissed the world No 1's application to have his visa cancellation overturned one day before the start of the Australian Open, in which Djokovic had been expected to defend his title. 
澳大利亚联邦法院1月16日裁定，驳回塞尔维亚网球选手德约科维奇就自己的赴澳签证被取消而提起的上诉，这意味着世界网坛男单“一哥”、卫冕冠军无法参加次日开赛的2022年澳大利亚网球公开赛。

The 34-year-old from Serbia was trying to use a medical exemption to get around the requirements everyone at the Australian Open－players, their support teams, spectators and others－be inoculated against COVID-19. Djokovic is not vaccinated, and the government said his presence could stir up anti-vaccine sentiments.
