[00:00:32.00]One summer morning many Indians arrived at a frontier village.
[00:00:37.90]The Indians wanted to destroy the village and kill the settlers.
[00:00:42.80]The settlers wanted to send a messenger to a military fort to ask for help.
[00:00:49.00]The fort was 30 miles away. It was very dangerous.
[00:00:54.50]There were enemy Indians everywhere.
[00:00:57.50]Johnny wanted to save the lives of the settlers.
[00:01:01.60]He knew all the secret paths in the forest and in the mountains.

[00:01:08.70]He took the message to the fort.
[00:01:11.30]The soldiers at the fort got on their horses and went to defend the settlers.

[00:01:43.80]The settlers escaped to the forest and no one was killed.
[00:01:48.90]Johnny loved all forms of human and animal life.
[00:01:52.90]He didn't eat meat because he didn't want to kill animals.

[00:02:11.30]He heard the cry of an animal.
[00:02:13.90]Behind a tree he found a deer.
[00:02:17.90]"My poor friend! said Johnny.
[00:02:21.10]"Don't be afraid!"
[00:02:22.90]He examined the deer and said, 
[00:02:26.20]"Your leg is injured.
[00:02:28.30]I can help you." 
[00:02:30.10]The deer wasn't afraid.
[00:02:32.90]Johnny stayed with the deer for many days and helped it.
[00:02:37.60]I'm happy you can walk again.
[00:02:39.90]Go and run in the forest, my little friend!"
[00:02:43.40]During a snow storm, Johnny wanted to sleep inside a small cave.
[00:02:48.50]He saw a big family of racoons sleeping inside the cave.
[00:02:53.50]He did not want the racoons to go outside into the snow.
[00:02:57.40]So Johnny slept outside in the cold!
[00:03:01.10]For almost 50 years, Johnny Appleseed helped the American frontier to grow.
[00:03:07.40]His apple trees, his books, his generosity and his kindness made the frontier a happy place.
[00:03:16.50]Johnny became a legend during his life.
[00:03:19.90]Everyone loved him.
[00:03:22.10]He was a true friend of the settlers, the Indians and the animals.
