[00:00:00.60]The Selfish Giant
[00:00:03.40]Part One
[00:00:05.10]Winter
[00:00:08.10]Every afternoon the children play in the Giant's garden.
[00:00:14.20]It is a big, lovely garden with green grass.
[00:00:20.20]Beautiful flowers grow there.
[00:00:23.90]There are twelve peach trees
[00:00:26.60]with delicate pink blossoms.
[00:00:30.80]The birds sit on the trees and sing sweet songs.
[00:00:37.30]The children listen to the birds.
[00:00:41.10]'How happy we are here!' the children say.
[00:00:46.70]The Giant is away.
[00:00:50.20]He is visiting his friend the ogre.
[00:00:55.50]After seven years the Giant returns home.
[00:01:01.50]When he arrives he sees the children in his garden.
[00:01:06.90]They are playing.
[00:01:15.00]'What are you doing here?'
[00:01:18.10]he says in a loud voice.
[00:01:22.10]The children are very scared
[00:01:24.90]and run away.
[00:01:26.40]'This is my garden! My garden!' says the Giant.
[00:01:33.10]'Only I can play here.'
[00:01:37.40]So the Giant builds a high wall around the garden.
[00:01:42.90]Then he puts up a sign:
[00:01:52.00]No One Must Enter
[00:01:56.40]He is a very selfish Giant.
[00:02:01.50]Now the poor children have no place to play.
[00:02:07.30]They can't play on the road.
[00:02:10.50]There are big stones on the road and the children don't like them.
[00:02:16.90]After school, the children walk near the high wall.
[00:02:22.80]They talk about the beautiful garden inside.
[00:02:29.30]It is spring and there are little blossoms and little birds everywhere.
[00:02:37.40]But in the garden of the Selfish Giant it is still winter.
[00:02:44.70]The birds do not sing there because there are no children.
[00:02:50.30]There are no blossoms on the trees.
[00:02:55.20]A beautiful flower puts its head out of the grass.
[00:03:00.50]It looks for the children.
[00:03:03.70]It sees the sign and goes back into the ground.
[00:03:09.70]It goes to sleep.
[00:03:13.80]Only the Snow and the Frost are happy.
[00:03:18.90]'Spring doesn't come to this garden,' they say.
[00:03:25.80]'We can live here all year!'
[00:03:32.40]The Snow covers the grass with her big white cloak.
[00:03:38.80]The Frost paints the trees silver.
[00:03:44.00]The Snow and the Frost invite the North Wind to stay with them.
[00:03:50.20]The North Wind comes and blows all day in the garden.
[00:03:56.40]He has a big warm coat and a hat.
[00:04:04.20]'This is a wonderful place,'
[00:04:08.30]says the North Wind. 'We must invite the Hail.'
[00:04:15.20]So the Hail comes.
[00:04:18.40]He is dressed in grey.
[00:04:21.30]For three days he runs around the garden.
[00:04:26.40]Then he dances on the roof. There is a lot of hail.
[00:04:34.30]'Why doesn't the Spring come?'
[00:04:38.00]asks the Selfish Giant.
[00:04:41.80]He sits at the window and looks at his cold, white garden.
[00:04:49.70]The Spring never comes and the Summer never comes.
[00:04:55.80]The Autumn gives fruit to all gardens.
[00:05:00.20]But it doesn't give any fruit to the Selfish Giant's garden.
[00:05:05.90]'He is too selfish,' the Autumn says.
[00:05:11.90]So, it is always winter there.
[00:05:16.60]The North Wind, the Hail, the Frost and the Snow live in the Selfish Giant's garden.
