The world's largest stand-alone duty-free facility — Haikou International Duty-Free City Shopping Complex — opened last week. Located near the key transportation hub of Haikou along the northern coast of the island province of Hainan, the shopping mecca covers an area of 280,000 square meters and features more than 800 notable brands, including five global firsts and more than 50 stores with the world's latest designs.

Last year, about one in two travelers to the tropical island visited duty-free shops and one in six purchased offshore duty-free goods. In 2021, duty-free sales in Hainan accounted for about half of the province's tourism revenue, provincial governor Feng Fei said. Currently, the annual tax-free shopping quota in Hainan is 100,000 yuan per person. There are 45 categories of duty-free goods and the province is now home to 11 duty-free shops.

Too many daily calories from highly processed foods like lunch meats, frozen dinners and packaged cookies may speed up cognitive decline, a new study suggests. In the study, researchers examined the diets and cognitive function test results of more than 8,000 adults in Brazil. At the start of the study, participants consumed an average of about 2,850 calories a day. About 28 percent of their daily calories came from highly processed foods.

Ultra-processed foods are defined as “industrial formulations of food substances (oils, fats, sugars, starch, and protein isolates) that contain little or no whole foods and typically include flavorings, colorings, emulsifiers and other cosmetic additives,” according to the study.
