小雪这个节气之所以叫小雪，是因为“雪”是寒冷天气的产物。“小雪”是个比喻，反映的是这个节气期间寒流活跃、降水渐增，不是表示这个节气下很小量的雪。

这个节气期间的气候寒未深且降水未大，故用“小雪”来比喻这个节气期间的气候特征。谚语“小雪雪满天，来年必丰年”是农民朋友对小雪节气时下雪的赞扬，此时的雪水能抗旱防寒。

人们从小雪节气就忙碌起来，为春节储备过冬的粮食，有的腌菜，有的腌肉，热闹非凡。小雪节气的风俗主要是吃糍粑、腌菜、晒鱼干、刨汤肉、食羊肉等。小雪节气过后，寒意越来越明显，人们也要酌（zhuó）情加衣，饮食习惯也有所改变。

In some areas of southern China, people have a custom of making and eating a kind of sticky rice cake, which is called “ciba” in Chinese. In the old days, the sticky rice cake was a traditional festival food. Farmers used to offer it to the bull god. Today it’s a popular snack, which is eaten at different festivals.
