The reason that Roots & Shoots has its name, it's symbolic. So I always ask people to imagine their favorite big tree and then to think about how that tree began began its life as a little seed.

之所以有“根与芽”这个名字，是因为它具有象征意义。我总是让人们想象一下他们最喜欢的大树，想象一下一颗种子是如何成长为一棵大树的。

So I think of an English oak, an acorn, and when that acorn began to grow, little white roots appear and a little tiny shoot, and you can pick it up. And it seems so tiny, so frail, so weak. And yet, there is a magic and a life force in that seed, so strong, so powerful.

我会想到一棵英国橡树，一颗橡树种子，当种子开始生长时，长出来了白色小根还有小芽，你把它捡起来，它看起来那么小，那么脆弱，那么无力。然而，那颗种子里有一种魔力和生命力，如此强大，如此有力。

But those little roots to reach the water can break through rocks, and eventually knock them aside. And that little shoots to reach the sunlight can work its way through cracks in a brick wall, and eventually knock it down.

但是，那些到达水面的小根系可以冲破岩石，最后把它们挤到一边。而那些接触阳光的小芽可以穿破砖墙的裂缝，最终把困难打倒。

So we see the rocks and the walls as all the problems we humans have inflicted on poor old planet Earth, environmental and social. And Roots&Shoots is about hope. Hundreds and thousands of young people around the world can break through and can make this a better world.

我们可以把岩石和墙壁，看作是人类给这颗可怜古老的地球造成的环境和社会问题。而“根与芽”则是希望。世界各地成千上万的年轻人可以冲破重重壁垒，让这个世界变得更美好。
