Remember, perspective can cause two people to look at the same thing and see two totally different things.

How was the Guatemala trip?

Lily: Yeah. So I also just mentioned, you also mentioned that you were quite sick, almost like most of your trip in Guatemala. So how was the trip Guatemala for you now you are back home for almost a month now, right?

Bella: Yeah, I've been back for a while. I wanted to go to Guatemala cause I went there in college for a study abroad and it changed my life. It was such a positive experience. But this time I went by myself first time traveling alone. I've traveled alone but on retreats to meet up with groups. But I was solo the whole time. First day I got there I got sick food poisoning or I might have accidentally had tap water. Who knows, maybe the ice throwing up. It

Lily: It is the welcome of Guatemala, everybody has to be sick. I had a goodbye gift the first time I was here. I had a goodbye gift, which I was having food poisoning on the last day.

Bella: Oh my God. Apparently a nasty one. Oh no, you've been there before.

Lily: I was in Guatemala six, six years ago.

Bella: Oh my God, how interesting. And I went 10 years ago. It's funny how it brings people back.

Lily: Yeah, definitely.

Bella: It’s also Lake Atitlan where we were is also known to be a vortex if you've heard.

Lily: And you told me that. Yeah, I like that idea.

Bella: Well I felt like it is because the energy felt very intense. I was feeling everything at a higher level, more strongly, more intensely. And I think that that's part of me getting sick. I think I was releasing something. I needed to purge some energy that was trapped in me because despite getting sick and having such a hard time, I did feel like a new person after the trip.

Lily: Amazing. You did the perfect advertising there.

Bella: <laugh>. Yeah, sometimes we need to learn lessons hard in harder ways. Sometimes they're more valuable that way when we learn them through going through something because I feel much stronger after having that experience because I feel like I can survive anything now. Because being alone in a place where there's not a lot of people, there aren't many stores. I was on a very small, small village away from

Lily: Santa Cruz.

Bella: Santa Cruz, yes. And there were no markets. Everything closed at five. There was no one at my Airbnb. It was the off season. So there weren't a lot of travelers and I was dying. It happened three times I got sick and finally I just said, I'm gonna go home. But I do, I felt like I survived some epic challenge or I just went through Survivor being on that show.

Lily: <laugh>. Wow, nice. So how's the life back since you got back to Los Angeles? You said that it was a lot of energy here, but is it changed since you got back?

Bella: Well, something interesting happened and it's the same thing that happened the last time I visited Guatemala. I came back with this new appreciation for life and for all of the amenities and conveniences that we have in a city like Los Angeles that you often take for granted. Because when you go off to a small village in a third world country and you see how other people live, it really puts things into perspective. And when I went 10 years ago, I had never really left the country. I had never been to a third world country. I was just in LA and I thought that's what the whole world was. I was in college at the time, I had a very, my mind wasn't as open. And then everything changed, everything shifted. I became so much more grateful, appreciated things that I had. I didn't take things for granted.

But so many years had passed by so you kind of forget the lessons, you start taking things for granted again. And then I went back and cuz I remember just not wanting to be in LA, not liking it, wanting to get out. When I got back, I saw it in a new light and I appreciated it more. I don't know if I'm gonna spend my whole life in LA, but I definitely saw it in a new light and appreciated every little thing. Not that Guatemala is not great because of the food, the people, the culture is amazing, but it's a very poor country. And when you see how other people live, you really appreciate everything that you have. So it was amazing to go back.

Lily: That’s so true. Actually, six years years ago, six years ago I was here. I was brokenhearted because I just got cheated by my husband and I just wanted to do something that makes me feel good. And I was here building a bottle school with 25 people from all over the world. I was thinking that I was giving, but actually I feel like the people here was giving me, instead, I thought I was doing the good things for the community. But instead it's like the people they are, they give me a new perspective of life. And I was just like, oh, so appreciative. They don't have cell phone. And then they are like, don't make lots of money. They don't make money at all. And then they are happy. So just give me a new perspective. And then I didn't speak any Spanish, but that trip inspired me to learn Spanish. So now this time I’m back here is actually, I want to improve my Spanish and now I can speak more, communicate with the people here. I feel really appreciative. And just like you said, how a trip can really change you.

Bella: Yeah, exactly. I'm glad you had such a similar experience. I think everybody in the world needs to experience that. I remember the first time I came back, I couldn't stop talking about how I went into a house and they didn't have a floor. They lived with a dirt floor. And it is just such a small thing that you overlook every single day, like a floor. And some people just don't have it. They have dirt. More common than we think because we're not told this on a daily basis. It's not like we turn on the news and it shows all the poor people in the world that are struggling that and it's because of the corruption in their governments and things like that. We don't know what's really going on in the world. But when you go out and see it face to face, then it's really clicks and you realize how blessed you are.
