A black teen knocked on the wrong door and got shot in Kansas City, Missouri, in one of a series of similar shootings across the US.

Ralph Yarl, 16, went to pick up his siblings from a friend’s house on Thursday night. However, Yarl rang the wrong bell and was shot by the white homeowner, Andrew Lester, 84.

Yarl suffered gunshot wounds to his right arm and left frontal lobe above his left eye, and he had to ask at three different homes before someone helped him. Yarl is still hospitalized.

“There was a racial component to the case,” said a local prosecutor. Lester has been charged with assault in the first degree and armed criminal action, and faces life in prison.

On the same day, two police officers responded to a burglary call at an apartment in Brooklyn, New York. They shot and killed a 78-year-old resident after he pointed a gun at them.

On April 15, a 20-year-old New York woman was fatally shot after pulling into the wrong driveway while looking for her friend's house. In early April, three New Mexico police officers responded to a call and knocked on the wrong door; they shot the homeowner after he opened the door with a gun.

> Floating ocean garbage is home to coastal species

Hundreds of coastal species are thriving in a patch of garbage and plastic situated in the ocean between the Hawaiian islands and California, according to a recent study published in the British journal Nature Ecology and Evolution.

At 1.6 million square kilometers (0.62 million square miles), the garbage patch is the world’s largest ocean debris floating area, containing an estimated 1.8 trillion pieces of plastic.

Researchers studied species found on 105 pieces of debris collected between November 2018 and January 2019, and found that nearly 70 percent of the debris was inhabited by 484 invertebrates, representing 56 species.

The coexistence of pelagic and coastal creatures shocked the researchers, they said, as plastic is not easily decomposed and floats far in the oceans, which provides living space for crabs, sea anemones and other coastal species.

Researchers said it was unclear what consequences the ecosystem would bring.

About 460 million tons of plastic waste are produced globally each year, but only around 9 percent is recycled, and much ends up in the oceans, according to the United Nations Environment Program.
