It’s the sort of gift that Bill Gates Sr. wanted from his son. Nothing gaudy or fashionable, in fact, nothing for himself at all. Instead, something to inspire public service in others, something to give back. Something he has insisted on long before his son became the world’s richest man.
For his father’s 80th birthday, Microsoft Corporation chairman Bill Gates decided on something close to the old man’s heart — $33.3 million as scholarships to law students at the University of Washington.
The gift is the largest for scholarships in school history, said the university president Mark A. Emmert. Every year five students will receive the William H. Gates Public Service Law Scholarships, which includes tuition, academic costs and living expenses. If they want to get it, they must work at least seven years after graduation at nonprofit organizations or government agencies or pay back the entire sum — about $100,000 — as a loan.
Gates Sr., a Washington law graduate and longtime lawyer said he had no idea of the program before it was announced Wednesday, the day he turned 80, at a meeting of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation — even though he is chairman of the charitable group.
“I was surprised and very happy. It was a very exciting moment,” he said. “It’s perfect. This is a country where the contribution of government and the contribution of charitable groups are so important to the life we enjoy.”
