Pepsi pulled from supermarket shelves inEurope over price increases

Carrefour, one of France’s biggest supermarket chains, will stop selling PepsiCo products because they have becometoo expensive, in the latest clash between retailers and their suppliers overprices.

Stores in France will display a note alongside Pepsi, 7up and Lay’s chips, among other products, that reads: “We areno longer selling this brand due to unacceptable price increases. We apologizefor any inconvenience caused,” CNN affiliate BFM-TV reported.

BFM-TV reported that Carrefour would pullPepsiCo products from stores in Italy, Spain, and Belgium, as well.

This move marks an escalation inCarrefour’s attempts to pressure some of the world’s biggest consumer goods companies to cut their prices after hiking them over the past two years inresponse to soaring energy, commodity, and labor costs.

Reuters reported in September that thesupermarket chain had started a “shrinkflation” campaign — slapping warnings onproducts ranging from Lindt chocolates to Lipton Ice Tea advising customers that they had shrunk in size, but still cost more, even though raw material costs had eased.

Carrefour CEO Alexandre Bompard has repeatedly said consumer goods companies are not cooperating in efforts to cutthe price of thousands of staples, despite a fall in the cost of raw materials, according to Reuters.

But PepsiCo CEO Ramon L. Laguarta said onan earnings call in October that the company anticipated “higher inflation” inits business, which would keep prices elevated this year.

Preliminary data published Thursday showed inflation in France ticked up to 4.1% in December, from 3.9% in November. Foodinflation fell from 7.7% to 7.1%, the country’s statistics agency said.

Walking could lower your risk of type 2diabetes, and your speed may affect how much, study finds

When it comes to walking and type 2 diabetes risk, it’s not just how much you do it that helps — it’s also how fastyou move, a new study has found.

Brisk walking is associated with a nearly 40% lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes later in life, according to thestudy published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine.

The study authors reviewed 10 previousstudies conducted between 1999 and 2022, which assessed links between walking speed and the development of type 2 diabetes among adults from the UnitedStates, the United Kingdom and Japan.

After a follow-up period of eight years onaverage, compared with easy or casual walking those who walked an average pacehad a 15% lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes, the researchers found.Walking at a “fairly brisk” pace meant a 24% lower risk than those who easilyor casually walked. And “striding walking had the biggest benefit: a 39%reduction in risk.

Easy or casual walking was defined as lessthan 2 miles per hour. The average pace was defined as 2 to 3miles per hour. Each kilometer increase in walking speed above brisk was associated with a 9% lower risk of developing the disease.

Dr. Michio Shimabukuro, a professor andchairman of the department of diabetes, endocrinology and metabolism at theFukushima Medical University School of Medicine, agreed — adding that“increased exercise intensity due to faster walking speeds can result in agreater stimulus of physiological functions and better health status.”
