One of the most unforgettable holidays I had was in November 2023 when I visited Malacca, Malaysia, with a group of university friends. What made this vacation unusual was not just the destination, but the diverse mix of companions on this adventure. The group included a schoolmate from Turkey, another from India, and the rest were girls from China, containing both graduate and PhD students from a variety of majors. It was the first time I had traveled abroad with my school peers.
We started this journey by taking a 3-hour bus ride from Johor Bahru, a city in the south of Malaysia bordering Singapore. The anticipation of exploring a different country, coupled with the company of friends from different cultures, injected a sense of excitement throughout the trip.
The word ‘Malacca’ had left a lasting impression on me since my childhood geography classes. It felt surreal to finally be in a place that had sat in my memory from decades earlier. It sounded exotic. The ancient city's historical and cultural richness unfolded before me as we walked around the town.
One of the highlights was ascending the highest tower in the city, from where we were able to have a breathtaking view of the famous Malacca Strait. The panoramic scene was nothing short of magnificent, making the journey even more rewarding because it was on top of our ‘tour-Malacca’ list. We took lots of photos up there.
Essentially, this unusual holiday was a blend of diverse companionship, historical fascination, and a city that had intrigued me since childhood.
