Lingshan Mountain attractions
The history of Liangshan Mountain of Wuxi dates back to the Tang Dynasty 1,000 years ago. Legend has it that the famous monk Xuanzang, on returning from his pilgrimage to India, happened to visit the mountain sitting close to Taihu Lake was loud with marvels at the rolling green peaks and exceptional scenery, and the mountain was then named Small Lingshan Mountain. And the Lingshan Buddha Statue is perched here.
We, driving along Taihu Lake toward the scenic areas of Lingshan Mountaion, can catch glimpses of the figure of the golden-bronze Buddha, its left hand hanging and right hand turning upward, facing the vast waters of Taihu Lake, barely showing amid green trees. According to statistics, the 88m-high statue, 18m higher than the giant Buddha statue of Leshan (Sichuan Province), is the highest of its kind in China. Its site, the area of the Small Lingshan Mountain, used to be the site of Xiangfu Temple, a celebrated temple in the Tang and Song Dynasties. In an effort to boost Buddhist culture, the temple has been rebuilt and a standing figure of Sakyamuni Buddha erected in the open air.
Watching from a close distance, you will see the Buddha, with such an awesome size, looking downward, composed, kind and full of wisdom. The height of the sight-seeing platform looks out to the infinite Taihu Lake and the green and deep Black Dragon Mountain and White Tiger Mountain hugging the figure of Buddha which attracts tourists to Wuxi for its renown and inspires awe from local people. The endless streams of worshippers here mirror the cultural prosperity, peace and harmony of this promised land.
