There was a table set out under a tree in front of the house. The March Hare and the Hatter were sitting drinking tea. A Dormouse was sitting between them. He was fast asleep. The March Hare and the Hatter were using his head as a cushion. They rested their elbows on the Dormouse's ears and talked over his head.
The table was large but the three were all crowded together at one corner.
"No room! No room!" they cried when they saw Alice coming.
"There's plenty of room!" said Alice indignantly. She sat down in a large armchair at one end of the table.
"It wasn't very civil of you to sit at our table without being invited," said the March Hare.
