The line of the story is set in the future tense,year 2025. Theodore, the main character in the movie, is a lonely and reserved man. His job is to write love letters for those who are not good at expressing their feelings. Usually his letters are full of emotions. He has a failed marriage with his beloved ex Catherine and since then he never fully recovers. Then there is a chance that he gets to know a newlydeveloped artificial intelligence operation system OS1 , a computer system which is able to speak to people and could develop her own consciousness and emotions. In a way, she is a sexy woman named Samantha, funny, humorous and considerable. She learns incredibly fast that they quickly become friends. 

Samantha convinced Theodore to go for a blind date which is set by one of his friends, Amy. When the woman he dated learns that he is never planning to be remarried, she went away. The incident turned out to be a chance for Samantha and Theodore to become closer. They found desires and needs on each other, gradually the friendship turned into a hot relationship. When his ex knew about this, she couldn’t understand this weird and sick relationship, calling him a coward who couldn’t handle real relationship in reality..

While the relationship between Theodore and Samantha became steady and further, Theodore sensed some difference and found that sometimes he couldn’t reach Samantha, or didn’t know what she was doing. At last, Samantha confessed that she was seeing 8316 men simultaneously, having close relationships with 641 of them, Theodore was just one of them. Nevertheless, she insisted that she loved Theodore deeply and the love was was one of a kind, it had nothing to do with other men she was seeing.
However，the development of  artificial intelligence was so out of control and fast. Finally Samantha told Theodore  that she was so evolved that she couldn’t stay any more. She had to go to find a bigger world and pursue her existence with other operation systems. She left, leaving Theodore depressed alone. After the miserable pains, he woke up. He accepted the reality and wrote a letter to his ex,telling her he still loves her and accepts the truth that they could never be together.
