To My Dear and Loving Husband

If ever two were one, then surely we. 
If ever man were loved by wife, then thee;
If ever wife was happy in a man,
Compare with me ye women if you can. 
I prize thy love more than whole mines of gold,
Or all the riches that the East doth hold. 
My love is such that rivers cannot quench,
Nor ought but love from thee give recompense. 
Thy love is such I can no way repay; 
The heavens reward thee manifold, I pray.
Then while we live, in love let’s so persever, 
That when we live no more we may live ever.

1. Anne Bradstreet, America’s first published poet, was among a group of early English settlers in Massachusetts in 1630s. She was born into a wealthy Puritan family. Her poems largely deal with her role as a mother, her sufferings in life and her Puritan faith.

2.“To My Dear and Loving Husband” is often read during wedding ceremonies. It is noted for its succinct yet passionate language expressing a wife’s love towards her husband.

4.‘Live’ appears three times in two lines, but each time is used differently. “While we live” means “while we are still alive on earth”. “When we live no more we may live ever” means “even if our physical bodies no longer exist, our love will still be eternal”.
