Anonymity and Confidentiality 匿名性&机密性
在对于受访者的自身的利益和福祉的保护里，最重要的一条就是保护受访者的身份信息，特别是在调查研究中。在本小节中，巴比对于匿名性和保密性的做法进行了详细的解释。
很多情况下，问卷匿名性一定程度上阻碍了问卷的回收和数据收集，尽管如此，有些特殊的情况也是值得“匿名”的。
在受访者信息机密性的例子中，本节提到了华盛顿州立大学的研究生Rik Scarce的例子，Rik在进行90年代的生态环境运动中对环境保护主义者进行了社会调查，而由此受到监禁。他在接受审讯时说：
Your question calls for information that I have only by virtue of a confidential disclosure given to me in the course of my research activities. I cannot answer the question without actually breaching a confidential communication. Consequently, I decline to answer the question under my ethical obligations as a member of the American Sociological Association and pursuant to any privilege that may extend to journalists, researchers, and writers under the First Amendment.
