Britain under the Microscope – Going to University (Advanced)
· Tuition Fees – is it reallyworth it to go to university?
o Universities fees are up to9,000 pounds – 20 years ago they were free!
o Students are now customers –less satisfied with their courses (37% are satisfied)
o Student well-being is quite low
§ Before students did not have much financial pressure – there weremore scholarships
§ Students were expected to have a lot of free time – go travelling,go on gap years – the stereotype of the lazy student
§ Now – students want to study much more and they can’t afford to dolots of things
· Student loan debt – morestudents having to take part-time jobs
o Universities are becoming morelike businesses rather than places of learning
o As more people go touniversity, there are fewer jobs available
o In the past – it was easier toget a good job after university – many people didn’t have to go as there werelots of jobs that didn’t need a university education
§ Now – most jobs need a university degree
§ Internships are much more common – difficult for less-well-offstudents as they are generally unpaid
· Russell Group/Oxbridge – notvery inclusive
o Oxford and Cambridge arefrequently criticized for being too elite
o There are more students frompublic schools going to these universities
o The interviews are quite tough– students in public schools are more coached in how they can pass theinterviews

And he would make some comments or supplements after our presentation. It was challenging yet thrilling at the same time. I wish one day I could still study abroad and feel the difference between education here and there more vividly.

This is a topic I used to discuss with my foreign students when I was a student. I never went abroad for study. But when I was a postgraduate, we had one professor from America, who asked us to read extensively before coming to the class. Then we will have the presentation on certain topics

One mistake: foreign friends not students.....
