北大校长念错'鸿鹄'致歉

Peking University President Lin Jianhua has apologized for his mispronunciation of a word at its 120th anniversary celebration triggered online criticism. Lin made the mistake while delivering a speech meant to inspire students at Peking University's 120th anniversary ceremony on Friday. 

4日，北京大学迎来建校120周年校庆，校长林建华在发表励志演讲时念错了一个词的发音，招致了网友批评，之后林建华就此致歉。

The word should be pronounced "honghu", indicating birds that can fly high. The president pronounced it as "honghao", which has no meaning. 

"鸿鹄"一词应该念成"hong hu"，指飞得很高的鸟，但林校长读成了"hong hao"。

The mistake went viral online after the speech. 

演讲结束后这一错误在网络上被疯传。

Lin posted a letter of apology on Weiming BBS, the university's online bulletin board, on Saturday. 

林建华5日在北大在线论坛"未名BBS"上发表致歉信。

He admitted in the letter that "I was not familiar with the pronunciation and learned it this time". 

他承认自己"真的不熟悉这个词的发音，这次应当是学会了。

Lin, a chemist, said in the letter that despite being university president, he is "not good in literature and may have disappointed students and friends".

"林建华是一名化学家，他在信中表示，虽然是北大校长，但他的文字功底不好，让同学和朋友失望了。

The British royal family released the first official photographs of the newest family member, Prince Louis. Charlotte is also seen holding her baby brother.

The touching snaps – taken by his mother, the Duchess of Cambridge, are the first glimpses of the prince since he was taken home from St Mary's Hospital where he was born 13 days ago.

The new images show Charlotte, who was three on Wednesday, immediately warming to her big-sister role, resting baby Louis in her lap and instinctively placing a protective arm around him.

A 104-year-old Australian scientist is on his way to Switzerland to end his life through assisted dying, a right-to-die activist says.

Supporters of the renowned academic David Goodall had expressed fears that Australian officials would prevent him from traveling to Europe.

Goodall an honorary research associate at Edith Cowan University in Perth, is not terminally ill, but is seeking what he calls "voluntary euthanasia" on the grounds of his quality of life deteriorating.

Swiss law permits assisted suicide, including for foreign nationals, however the practice is illegal in Australia. "I might as well not have it (my health) getting worse and worse, making me unhappy as it goes," Goodall said.
