The Harvard Museum of Natural History wasestablished in 1998. While HMNH is a relatively newinstitution, its roots and the collection of its parentmuseumsthe Museum of Comparative Zoology, theHarvard University Herbaria，and the Mineralogicaland Geological Museumcan reach back to the 19thcentury. The collections in these museums are about 21 million specimen. Only a small fraction are ondisplay in the HMNH gallerles. The aim of establishingHMNH is to enhance public understanding andappreciation of the natural world and the humanplace in it, sparking curiosity and a spirit of discovery in people of all ages.

With this aim in mind，the Museum has come up with many ideas to attract the public’sattention and interest. First, there are permanent exhibits and special exhibits. Thepermanent exhibits are on exhibition all year long and are held respectively in the GreatMammal Hall, Evolution, Arthropods: Creature and Rule, the Glass Flowers, the ZoologicalGalleries, and the Mineralogical and Geological Gallery. These exhibits are unique and cannot befound anywhere else in New England. The special exhibits present unique and diverseperspectives on the changing world: its past, present, and possible futures. Therefore, thespecial exhibits will display different things with different themes at different times.

In addition to those exhibits, there are lectures and classes for both adults and kids. Theselectures and classes are given and taught by renowned authors, Harvard faculty, and otherscientists. The purpose is to excite the public interest in natural history. Not only individuals areencouraged to come, but schools are encouraged to organize the students to visit theMuseum. Therefore, the Museum has offered the opportunities for school children to visit themuseum after school and to study at the museum.

What attract people most may be the Travel Program. Each year, the Museum will offer over 40 trips to all 7 continents, including special family programs. Such a program will give people afirst-hand experience of the cultures and natural history of the world’s remote and beautifulareas. Such a program is not just for fun. These experiences are valuable to carry out theextensive educational programs mentioned above.
