World Cup ball back from space

Russian cosmonaut Anton Shkaplerov made it back to Earth Sunday along with an official match football that could be used later this month in the opening game of the World Cup in Moscow.

Shkaplerov, Scott Tingle of the US and Norishige Kanai of Japan touched down on the Kazakh steppe on time after a 168-day mission aboard the International Space Station. Roscosmos posted on Thursday a video of Shkaplerov and fellow cosmonaut Oleg Artemyev practicing in the ISS with an Adidas Telstar 18 football.

Russian news agency TASS reported that the ball is scheduled to be used during the opening game of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Moscow on June 14.

Book block? Try new ones!

It's a conundrum faced by every reader at some point – ditch a book that you are just not enjoying, or see it through with grim determination until the bitter end.

A poll suggests that many of us are unwilling to give up on a book, no matter how much we are struggling, while others will wait weeks, or even months, before conceding defeat.

Asked what factors make it hard to finish a book, the most common answer (chosen by 51%) was that they find it boring, or are not enjoying it, with about one in four (24%) saying they find it hard to concentrate when reading.

However, the Reading Agency suggested that anyone who finds themselves facing "book block" should not force themselves to continue with the book in question. As Sue Wilkinson, chief executive of The Reading Agency, said, "At a time when so many brilliant books are being written and published, you should never force yourself to read something you're not enjoying."

Supplements are useless

Vitamin and mineral supplements are a staple in many people's diets, but there is increasing evidence to suggest the most popular ones are essentially useless.

A new systematic review of data and trials published between January 2012 and October 2017 found that many popular multivitamins – as well as vitamin C, vitamin D, and calcium supplements – had no real advantage to people's health and that there was no evidence taking them reduced the risk of cardiovascular disease, heart attack, stroke, or early death.

"So far, no research on supplements has shown us anything better than healthy servings of less processed plant foods, including vegetables, fruits, and nuts," said Dr David Jenkins, the lead author of the study.

Peanuts Hotel opens in Japan

If you're a fan of Charles M. Schulz's endearing Snoopy character, then you will want to book a room at the Peanuts Hotel, which opens in Kobe, west Japan, on Aug 1. The hotel, whose slogan is "where guests feel comfortable" (taken from a 1962 Peanuts comic strip), features six floors of rooms and facilities inspired by characters from the Peanuts franchise.

The first floor has a Peanuts Cafe with themed drinks. If you are looking for something more substantial, the Peanuts Diner on the third floor is a restaurant serving dishes in a style that fuses Kobe and Peanuts elements.

The fourth, fifth, and sixth floors are given over to the 18 guest rooms, which are each individually designed and decorated. Though exact details of the rooms are yet to be announced, each floor has a different theme. Reservations open on July 9. A stay starts at 30,000 yen per adult, including breakfast.
