Just then he felta sudden banging and jerking on the line he held with his two hands. It wassharp and hard-feeling and heavy.

He is hitting thewire leader with his spear, he thought. That was bound to
come. He had to dothat.

It may make himjump though and I would rather he stayed circling now. The jumps were necessaryfor him to take air.

The fish hit thewire several times more and each time he shook his head the old man gave up alittle line.

'After a while thefish stopped beating at the wire and started circling slowly again.

The old man wasgaining line steadily now. But he felt faint again. He lifted some sea waterwith his left hand and put it on his head. Then he put more on and rubbed theback of his neck.
老人这时正不停地收进钓索。可是他又感到头晕了。他用左手舀了些海水，洒在脑袋上。然后他再洒了点，在脖颈上柔擦着。
"I have nocramps. " he said. "He'll be up soon and I can last. You have tolast. Don't even speak of it. ”
“我没怞筋，"他说。"它马上就会冒出水来，我熬得住。你非熬下去不可。连提也别再提了吧。”
He kneeled againstthe bow and, for a moment, slipped the line over his back again. I'll rest nowwhile he goes out on the circle and then stand up and work on him when he comesin, he decided.

It was a greattemptation to rest in the bow and let the fish make one circle by himselfwithout recovering any line.

But when thestrain showed the fish had turned to come toward the boat, the old man rose tohis feet and started the pivoting and the weaving pulling that brought in allthe line he gained.

I'm tireder than Ihave ever been, he thought, and now the trade wind is rising. But that will begood to take him in with. I need that badly.

"I'll rest onthe next turn as he goes out," he said. "I feel much better. Then intwo or three turns more I will have him. "

His straw hat wasfar on the back of his head and he sank down into the bow with the pull of theline as he felt the fish turn.

You work now,fish, he thought. I'll take you at the turn.
