查尔斯王子 | GQ年度最佳男人奖感言

For some reason, I have been asked to say a few words of this august gathering here and first of all I really wanted to apologise for being wrongly dressed. Really that I feared that none of you would really be able to compete with my incredibly snazzy dinner jacket, and I’m hugely grateful to Dylan for letting me have a little bit of preview of my obituary. It’s really is well worthwhile

Now listen, when I was first told of GQ magazine’s wish to give me a Man Of The Year award. I felt sure there must have been some kind of mistake and I thought it must be some sort of ill-deserved fashion award.Particularly as in fashion terms. I’m like a stopped clock. In other words, I’m fashionable once every 25 years. Instead, I learnt it was for philanthropy. And really it’s incredibly kind of you and GQ magazine to do this and I’m hugely grateful.

刚开始，当他们告诉我GQ杂志要给我颁发“年度人物大奖”。我就琢磨着这肯定是弄错了吧。我当时就心想，GQ不都只给型男潮男颁奖嘛。而我呢，尤其在时尚领域，我就像是一只停摆的钟。换而言之，每隔25年我才会变得时髦那么一丢丢。后来，我得知这是个表彰慈善贡献的奖项。真的，非常感谢GQ杂志和杂志主编这么做。我真心感激不尽。

But all I can say is that it wasn’t easy at the start when trying to set up these charities and organizations and raise money. And like the anonymous poem...They said that it could not be done with a laugh, he went right to it, He tackled the thing that couldn’t be done and couldn’t do it. After which I recall that great maxim of Ogden Nash, if at first you don’t succeed, the hell with it! So in fact I went on trying.

我想说，刚开始做慈善的时候，一切并不顺利。竭尽全力成立慈善机构，费尽心思筹措资金。就像那首匿名诗里写的-“所有人都说，这绝无可能完成，他却大笑一声，迎难而上，所有人都说无法完成的事情，最终被他迎刃而解。”后来，我又想起了美国诗人奥格登·纳许的智慧箴言：“如果你刚开始就一败涂地，那就去TM的吧！”于是我便继续努力尝试。

Now spending money on worthwhile projects is relatively easy, as you can imagine raising it or making it, is of course a great deal harder, hence my attempt to do a little marketing with Duchy Originals, this food company organic food company I started 26 years ago and that has enabled me over the years. There is nothing more satisfying than seeing the difference you can make to so many young people’s lives who have had difficulties and huge disadvantages have had unbelievably complicated lives.

大家都知道，把项目资金花掉，那可实在太容易了。然而，建立项目并筹措资金，则是难上加难，所以我也开始试着做一点营销。自创品牌“公爵原味”食品公司，这是我在26年前创办的有机食品品牌，过去这些年里，这个品牌总算帮我筹集到了慈善资金。也最终看到因此带来的改变，没有什么能比这更令人满意了，为许许多多生活在巨大劣势中的年轻人提供帮助，他们生活艰难困苦的程度，简直让人难以想象。

If you can actually provide them with an opportunity help them to develop confidence, above all self confidence or self esteem, suddenly their lives can be transformed and they can learn new skills, which is what we try to do with the Prince’s Trust and all sort of others of my charities, so above all else, I’m enormously grateful to so many of the wonderful generous people who have enabled me to set up a whole range of charities, some of which are now, my main ones under the umbrella of my Prince’s Foundation.

Without these wonderfully generous people, corporations, individuals, goodness knows who we would not have been able to do all this. And all that I can say is we are incredibly lucky in this country to have so many people like that who can make such a fantastic difference in so many areas of life. And from that point of view it has given me enormous pride just to see somebody like Idris Elba and other people we’ve started over the years, in their lives and the careers the difference that is made to them.

如果没有这些乐善好施、慷慨解囊的公司和个人，我甚至都不知晓他们的真实姓名，我们绝无可能实现这一切。我还想说一句，我们出生在这个国家真的非常幸运，有那么多无私奉献之人。正是他们，在英国人民生活的方方面面，做出如此巨大的改变。从这个角度来说，我内心巨大的自豪感，更油然而生。比如，做慈善的这些年来，我见到伊德瑞斯·艾尔巴和其他一些人，在他们的生活和职业生涯中，帮助并改变了我们这个社会。

So ladies and gentlemen, I’m enormously grateful for the fact that you decided to give me this award and I can see it’s something I can throe at a burglar when he comes in. Thank you very much to Dylan.
