Hey, welcome back, everyone! It’s already2019 and I wish everyone a happy new year!
All of you are trying to conquer English,but you might also know that there are three stages in understanding a foreign language.The first stage is being able to understand or conduct everyday communication.The second stage is being able to read and write skillfully. And the thirdstage is to be able to understand the culturally unique stuff. Humor is a partof culture. Do you recall what happened when you were watching many American sitcoms?A lot of times when foreign audiences laughed loudly but you didn’t. Yourewound the tape and found you know every word of the line, but still you didn’tget why people were laughing. That’s usually because you have stayed on the surfaceof a language instead of being able to get deeper into the cultural elements.Thus, one of the key indicators of whether you have understood English on a culturallevel is whether you can understand English jokes or even tell jokes inEnglish. True, this can be really hard. But one Chinese guy did a terrific joband his name is Joe Wong or Huang Xi. He was a PH.D in biochemistry and afternine years of hard work, he managed to turn himself from a man without a strongsense of humor into the first Chinese stand-up comedian to be giving Englishtalk shows in America. And he is a very popular one. Today, as the first issuein 2019, I will bring you one of his talk shows making fun of President Trump’simmigration policy. SoI am actually an American immigrant. And they say that America is a country of immigrants.So I have to ask you guys: please leave my country. [laughter] I’m serious. [laughter]We have a zero-tolerance policy right now. [laughter]
I heard thatAsians have become the largest growing immigrant group in America which isreally amazing because Mexicans can cross the river and come here, and I haveto fly thousands of miles to Mexico, [laughter] and then cross that river. [laughter]
Trump wants tobuild a wall to stop immigration. I am from China. [laughter] So I know a lotabout walls. [laughter] They don’t work. [laughter and scream] And centurieslater, it’s gonna become a tourist attraction. [laughter]
But I do respectTrump, though. After he took office, there was theKKK march, anti-KKK march, women’s march, anti-childseparation march. As youknow, how much Americans hate exercise. [laughter]
He has contributedmore to the Americans’ health, [laughter] than all MCA combined. [laughter] Andhe also contributes to the health of other countries, because laughter is thebest medicine. [laughter and scream]
Ihave a lot of things in common with white guys. For example, I have an Asianwife. [laughter]
