Introduction:

Hi, everyone. This is Perry. Do you suffer procrastination? You may wonder what procrastination is. Actually it means very often delayingdoing things or in Chinese 拖延症。It seems that everyone in our society is telling you procrastinationis bad, Professor Perry, you are right, his name is John Perry, not me,however, has a different understanding and explanation. We’ll hear it outtoday.

AudioScript:

Anchor man: Get it done later! Maybe get inFacebook, get in Twitter, maybe watch some TV, instead. We’ve all done it. We’veall found something else to do other than what we are supposed to be doing.

Say with mefolks: PROCRASTINATION. Dictionary.com refers to it as the act or habit ofputting off or delaying, especially something requiring immediate attention. And we are all busted.

However, my nextguest would argue procrastination is something to be perfected. John Perry, wroteThe Art of Procrastinationand we suggest that procrastinators have a way of getting other things done.John Perry, thank you very much for being here.

John Perry: I’m very glad to be here. Gary.Very very glad. I’m here for one of the many things that is going on in Atlantathis week end the Cater Book Festival. I give it a thought to a hundred procrastinatora day telling them they didn’t need to feel like other jerks and it went prettywell.

Anchor man: The book is very fun but isalso very serious. You call it a guide to effective lollygagging and postponing. You say that you can be a procrastinator but basically be a good person to getthings done.

John Perry: Yeah. You know procrastinationgets a bad wrap. A lot of psychologist write articles that you can read tellyou that if you are a procrastinator, you are an unproductive person and youare responsible for the gross national product going bad, you are cutting downon your own life and you tend towards alcoholism and you drive everyone elsecrazy. But the fact is it occurred to me one day I am a procrastinator and Iget a lot done.

Anchor man: You are professor of Philosophyat Stanford University, one of the nation’s greatest universities. Clearly yougot a lot of done to get where you are. I want to read you some of the thingsyou say are great about procrastination. You say not doing one thing is a wayof doing something else. The idea that you get other tasks done while avoidingthe one you really need to be doing. You say a lot of tasks disappear if givena chance. And procrastination can encourage productive subconscious thought theidea that the longer we take to tackle a task, the more creative we become. Toname a few. What is your favorite procrastination pastime?

John Perry: Well, first I think you gotta distinguishbetween procrastinating and being lazy. A lot of procrastinators are not lazyat all. They do all sorts of things as a way of not doing other things. That’swhat I call structure procrastination and don’t feel so bad. You are probably apositive thing in society

Anchor man: John has a radio show in publicradio called Philosophy Talk?

John Perry: Absolutely.

Anchor man: And you ever procrastinate missit?

John Perry: No, you got yourself in a professionthat I am touching on the edges, namely broadcasting where procrastination haverather large penalties attached to it. But you know there is two kinds of procrastination. One is kind of putting things up to the deadline and getting it done with a biga rush but making it. And the other is missing. Now in broadcasting you don’twant to that second one.

Anchor man: John we wanna make it tonightand thank you for joining us.

John Perry: Ok, thank you, Gary.

Anchor man: John Perry,The Art of Procrastination.

Ok, dear listeners, I want to thank you all for the support that you havebeen giving to our program. This is the end of today’s issue and I would saylet’s make it this year. We would resume after the Spring Festival on February14th, right, that’s the Valentine’s Day. And may everyone a HappySpring Festival and may you all the best in the coming new year. See you then!
