Hong Kong comedy star and film director Stephen Chow was in Guangzhou promoting his film “The New King of Comedy” on February 10th.
Stephen Chow confirmed in an interview that he would shoot “Kong Fu Hustle II” sometime in future.
Chow said that “Kong Fu Hustle II” would be a modern story happening in a foreign country and it would not be a repeat of “Kong Fu Hustle” that he produced in 2004.
In the roadshow in Guangzhou, Chow was asked if he would play a leading role in “Kong Fu Hustle II” or just a supporting role. Chow said chuckling (smiling) that he didn’t feel it alright to play a supporting role at this age and he would be too elderly to fight.
“The New King of Comedy” is a remake of Chow’s 1999 “King of Comedy,” which was critically acclaimed for its true-to-life depiction of the hardship and tribulation an aspiring actor experiences in his career. Chow’s early career of working as a film extra is believed to have inspired the story.
Three years ago, also during the Spring Festival holiday, Chow’s sci-fi comedy film “The Mermaid” raked in 3.39 billion yuan in ticket sales.
