1. M: Call me when you arrive at the town. I¡¯ll fetch you at the train station.
W: Shall I call you your office?
M: If you arrive before 5¡Ã00, call the office. Otherwise, call my home.

2. M: Hi, Rachel, I want to travel around Europe this summer. Would you like to be my partner?
W: Oh, travel around Europe? That¡¯s crazy! Let me think about it.

3. M: What do you know about our new English teacher?
W: It¡¯s said that he is a middle-aged man. And he is strict with students.
M: Really? I prefer the former teacher to him.

4. W: Has John known the news?
M: If he had been at the picnic yesterday, he would have heard about it.

5. W: Why are the children so noisy?
M: Because they want something for a snack.
W: Don¡¯t give them anything. They are going to have lunch soon.
M: All right!

6. W: Can you tell me the cheapest way to get to California?
M: If you go by bus, it is only ¡ç60. But if you go by train, it is almost twice that much.

7. W: Where do you spend your weekend? For me, movies and restaurants are good places to enjoy myself.
M: That¡¯s expensive to me. I¡¯d like to go to party with my friends.

M: She went to a party with Bob.

9. W: I heard you got a full mark in physics exams. Congratulations!

You now have 15 seconds to read Questions 11-13.

Some years ago, I moved to the country. There were not many houses in the neighborhood at that time.
The house closest to mine was occupied by a woman. She was about sixty years old and lived all by herself.
I used to take a morning walk and on my way home the old lady would invite me to her house for a cup of tea.
Soon we became good friends. We talked about a lot of things when we were together. But my neighbor never mentioned her family.
It seemed that she had no relatives and her only life companion was her pet¡ªa dog she called Tommy.
One night in July I was fast asleep when I was suddenly awakened by the barking of a dog.
When I opened the door, I was surprised to find Tommy there.
When the dog saw me, it started running towards the house of its owner, stopped, barked at me, and started running again.
I followed the dog to my neighbor¡¯s house and found that the old lady was lying on the floor.
Later I learned from the doctor at the hospital that the old lady had had a heart attack that night
and that her life would have been in danger if I had not taken her to the hospital immediately.

Questions 14-17 are based on an introduction of housing available for students.
You now have 20 seconds to read Questions 14-17.
Welcome, everyone, to this workshop on student housing.
I¡¯ll go through the information about types of housing available for the term and the procedure for application.
Then, if you have any questions, feel free to ask me.
There are two main types of housing for you to choose from: student dorms and the international houses.
As for now, there is some space available in each type, but they are filling up fast.
You should get your application in as soon as possible. Let me explain some of the main features of each type of housing.
The student dorms are for any student. We have men¡¯s dorms and women¡¯s dorms.
Most of the rooms have two beds, two closets, and two desks.
There are no cooking facilities in the dorms, but you can buy a meal ticket for the cafeteria.
The international houses are a group of apartments for both foreign students and resident students.
They are organized into language and culture themes, and some of them have rules about speaking only a certain language during meal times.
It¡¯s been a good way for students to learn other cultures and languages.
I think that the Spanish house is full, but there are rooms available in all the other houses.

You now have 40 seconds to check your answers to Questions 14-17.
Questions 18-21 are based on the following dialogue.
You now have 20 seconds to read Questions 18-21.

M: Hello, Julie. Where are you going?
W: To the cinema. How about coming with me?
M: I¡¯d love to. But I haven¡¯t finished my work yet.
W: What a pity! I believe it¡¯s a very good film.
M: Do you go to the cinema a lot?
W: Once a month. Most nights I stay at home and surf on the Internet.
M: Sounds relaxing. By the way, where are you going for your holiday this year?
W: I haven¡¯t decided yet. My husband is going to his mother¡¯s for a couple of weeks. She lives in the countryside, you know.
M: Oh, does she? It must be a quiet place.
W: Yes, but I want to go to the seaside.
M: Don¡¯t you like the country?
W: Yes, very much. But I want to get some suntan and go swimming in the sea this holiday. What are you going to do?
M: I¡¯m staying at home.
W: Aren¡¯t you going to have a holiday abroad this time?
M: No, I want to buy a car, and that¡¯s going to take every penny I¡¯ve got.

You now have 40 seconds to check your answers to Questions 18-21.
Questions 22-25 are based on the following dialogue between a librarian and a student.
You now have 20 seconds to read Questions 22-25.

W: I¡¯m sorry, but I can¡¯t let you check out these books.
M: What do you mean?
W: Well, the computer shows you¡¯ve got an overdue book, Art Work. And you can¡¯t borrow any book until you return it.
M: But that¡¯s impossible. I only started going to this school last month. And I¡¯m a business major, not an artist.
W: Hmm. The thing¡¯s pretty strange. Let me look up the records. OK, you are Robert Smith?
M: Yeah.
W: You live at 1423 West Conner Street?
M: Ah? No, I¡¯m living on campus now.
W: You did say you were Robert Smith, right?
M: Yeah. Well, my full name is Robert James Smith.
W: Let me check one more thing on the computer. I see now, there¡¯s another Robert Smith, Robert El. Smith.
And it looks like he¡¯s the one who got that overdue book checked out.
M: Another Robert Smith, no kidding?
W: So I guess you two never met.
M: No, I¡¯m thinking I should probably try. I could at least find out what has just happened.
W: Good idea. Now I let you check out these books today.
But I suggest you should start to use your middle name to avoid any problems like this in the future.
You now have 40 seconds to check your answers to Questions 22-25.
This is the end of Part B.
Now you have 3 minutes to transfer your answers from your test booklet to ANSWER SHEET 1.
That is the end of the listening comprehension section.
