Good morning.
Today, I’ll teach you two words that sound the same, but, that have different spellings and different meanings.
Phrases/Words
‘allot’
‘a lot’
‘many’
allot, a verb, means “to divide in parts” or “to give out in shares.”
A lot is an informal expression meaning “a great many” or “a great amount.” Avoid using it in formal writing. Instead, use the word ‘many’.
Example:
VERB: My husband allotted a portion of his monthly pay for his sister’s education. INFORMAL: He has a lot of relatives in the suburbs to support.
FORMAL: He has many relatives in the suburbs to support.
Practice
The boss allotted money for the workers to eat lunch.
There are a lot of people that work at the company.
There are many people that work at the company.
The government allotted more money for the poor people.
There are a lot of poor people in the world.
There are many poor people in the world.
Notice that when we use the phrase ‘a lot’ that we must add the word ‘of’. Practice these phrases and learn them well.
That’s all for today.
Goodbye for now.
I hope you have a wonderful day!
