Today, I will teach you a word and a phrase that are often confused. I’ll teach you the meaning and show you how to use them.
Words/Phrases
all ready, already
All ready is an expression functioning as an adjective and meaning “ready.”
Already is an adverb meaning “by or before this time” or “even now.”
Example:
ADJECTIVE: We are all ready to listen to the proposition.
ADVERB: We have already arrived at a decision.
Practice
We were already on our way when his call came. (when he called us/me)
“Hey mom, I’m all ready to go now.”
The student had already finished the exam.
When we arrived for dinner, the food was all ready.
I’m already wanting to go back to China.
Michael is nearly all ready to teach long lessons.
Notice that one of these ‘already’ is a single (one) word. The other one, ‘all ready’ is a phrase. They are spoken and pronounced the same. Make sure the you know the differences between them.
