once upon a time
in good old england there lived a little
lad
named elidor who was being brought up to
become a cleric
day after day he would trudge from his
mother's house
all the way to the monk scriptatorium
there he would learn his abc to read it
and to write it but he was a
very lazy boy and a little slow
too and as fast as he learned to write
one letter
he forgot another so it was very little
progress he was making
when the monk saw this they tried hard
to make him remember
things using several methods but all of
it was in vain soon their methods
started to become more and more
unbearable
till elidor could not stand them any
longer
stop stop it
and away eleador ran wiping the tears
from his face
eledor knew he couldn't go home as his
mother would not be very happy about him
leaving the scriptatorium
so a way he ran into the woods and kept
running for two long days and nights
hungry and thirsty
[Applause]
at last he found himself at a hollow
tree
at the site of a river and there he
sank down all tired and exhausted
[Music]
suddenly two little elves appeared in
front of him
hello you seem to be the same age as us
come along and we will lead you into a
land full of games and sports
eleador was surprised but thought for a
while
going back home is not an option let me
go with them
so eleador went with them at first
through an underground passage
all in the dark but soon they came out
into a most beautiful country with
rivers and meadows woods and plains
as pleasant as can be there the sun
never shone
and clouds were always over the sky so
that neither sun was seen by day
nor moon and stars at night
the elves led eledor to their king
who asked why and where he came from
i came from england where they make you
study
and remember things even if you don't
want to
um that is interesting
we don't do that here tell you what
you shall attend on my son
elidor happily nodded and left
and so eleador became friends with the
king's son
and joined him in all the games and
sports along with the other elves
their hair was fair and hung upon their
shoulders
they had little horses about the size of
greyhounds
and did not eat flesh fowl or fish
but lived on milk flavored with saffron
and just as they had such curious ways
so they had strange thoughts
they didn't take oaths and at the same
time
never uttered a lie they would jeer and
scoff at men for their struggles
lying and treachery yet though they were
so good
they worshipped none unless you might
say
they were worshippers of truth
all in all elidor was having a good
time time passed and he soon began
to long for home to see people of his
own size he went to the king
and speak permission to go and visit his
mother
very well you may go but
you must promise to come back after a
few days
and if you fail to keep your promise
this place will be forever lost to you
i promise i will come back your highness
and saying that eleador left
the little elves led him along the
passage
and guided him through the woods till he
came near his mother's house
there they waved him goodbye and
disappeared
[Music]
eleador entered his house and seeing him
his mother dropped all the utensils and
rushed to hug him
where have you been son what have you
done i have missed you so
much where were you tell me son
tell me and so elidor told her
everything that had happened his mother
was astonished to hear it all
but was happy that her son was finally
home
come on now go and take a warm bath i
will make your favorite porridge
yay it is so good to be back home
days passed and soon it was time for
ellador
to go back to the elf land
he went to his mother and told her about
it
no i am not letting you go anywhere
you're my
son ellador explained to her that he had
made a promise
and he has to honor it his mother wept
bitterly
but eldador promised that he would be
back soon
and thus elidor lived partly with the
elves
and partly with his mother
everything was going well until one day
when he was back to visit his mother he
told her of the yellow balls
they used in their play and which she
felt
sure must be of gold so
she asked him to bring one of the balls
back with him
the next time he returned think about
it son our lives would change
you have to do this son you have to
i will see what i can do mother
now the next time when the time came for
him to go back to his mother again
seizing one of the yellow balls which
lay close by
he rushed towards the passage
midday through the passage he heard a
scream
hey get back with that
[Music]
a marshal of the elf army had been
casually strolling by
when he saw eleador running away with
the ball
and gave chase immediately
as elidor ran and climbed out of the
hollow he
slept and the ball fell from his hands
no but it was too late
he had lost the ball and the tree also
disappeared forever
although he searched many times in the
years that followed
he could not find it and couldn't get
back to that fair country
how he missed the play in games of the
elves
so after a time he went back to the
monastery
and became in due course a monk
people used to come and seek him out as
he was now known
for his wisdom now it happened once
when elidor was older david a monk who
had trained him
came to converse well eliador
it seems you have grown up a great deal
from what you were
you're now a fine young man
yes but there will always be one thing
that will give me pain
and elidor told david everything about
the elves
ah how i miss those elves
i deeply regret stealing that ball
hmm why don't you try one last time
since you really do feel sorry for your
mistake
maybe your wish to see them will be
granted
i am really sorry but i doubt that i'll
find it i've tried for years
trust me eleador i know a lot more than
you
trust me and go you will find it
and so eleador suddenly filled with a
new sense of hope
left the scriptorium and went to the
woods
there to his astonishment he found the
hollow tree
standing tall and strong as if it had
never disappeared
it's it's here he was correct
eleador wasted no time at all and
climbed into the hollow
and was soon walking down the tunnel
as he reached the other side of it he
looked out
and saw all the elves walking around and
laughing
just as he had seen years ago
i'm back he wandered around
and gradually went to see his friends
he saw them all sitting in a garden and
they
all had grown up huh
eleador where have you been
you never visit us for so many years we
thought you hated us
eleador told them about how he had tried
to find
them but could never find the tunnel
father must have done that well no
wonder you didn't come back
i'm so happy to see you i wanted to
apologize to the king for stealing the
yellow ball of that time
so he went to the king where elidor
apologized dearly
well now i'm really pleased at your
apology
and since i have always been fond of you
you shall be forgiven
ellador was ecstatic about this he
thanked the king and left to join his
friends
[Music]
david the plan worked thank you for
looking after him
all these years well
he is a good boy thank you for opening
the entrance
[Music]
the elves and eleador enjoyed themselves
and eleador had learned an important
lesson
and that was to never cheat those who
trust you so
strongly always do good and remember
to apologize for whatever mistake that
is created
