Manufacturing PMI firms up

制造业PMI连续9个月扩张

China's manufacturing and service sector activities remained in the expansion zone for nine straight months as the country continued its recovery from the economic fallout of COVID-19. The purchasing managers' index (PMI) for China's manufacturing sector came in at 52.1 in November, up from 51.4 in October and representing the highest level of the year, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said Monday. 
我国制造业和服务业活动指数已连续9个月扩张，显示我国经济正从新冠疫情造成的影响中稳定恢复。11月30日，国家统计局发布数据显示，11月中国制造业采购经理指数(PMI)为52.1%，比上月上升0.7个百分点，创下今年以来的新高。

A reading above 50 indicates expansion, while a reading below reflects contraction. Commenting on the better-than-expected data, NBS senior statistician Zhao Qinghe said the improvements in these readings were a result of the country's efforts to coordinate epidemic control with social and economic development. The "marked growth" of the November PMI, together with improvements in all sub-indexes, indicated greater vitality in the country's manufacturing sector and a faster pace of recovery, Zhao said.
PMI高于50表示经济扩张，低于50则反映经济萎缩。国家统计局高级统计师赵庆河指出，数据好于预期是我国统筹疫情防控和经济社会发展取得的成果。11月份PMI显著增长，且各项分类指数普遍改善，显示我国制造业市场活力进一步增强，恢复性增长明显加快。

Coronavirus harms gender equality

Economic and domestic turmoil caused by the COVID-19 pandemic could wipe out 25 years of increasing gender equality, new United Nations data suggests. Lockdowns, job losses, school closures and dwindling income from the coronavirus have seen women take on significantly greater shares of housework and childcare. Employment and education opportunities are likely to be lost, and women may suffer from poorer mental and physical health.

"Everything we worked for, that has taken 25 years, could be lost in a year," the UN Women deputy executive director Anita Bhatia told the BBC. Women's new burden of care posed a "real risk of reverting to 1950s gender stereotypes," she said.

Biden unveils economic team

US President-elect Joe Biden on Monday unveiled his economic team, nominating Janet Yellen, former Federal Reserve chair, to lead the Treasury Department. If confirmed by the Senate, Yellen would be the first woman to serve as US treasury secretary in the department's 231 years of history. She would also be the first person to have served as treasury secretary, chair of the Council of Economic Advisers, and chair of the Federal Reserve.

A young man whose good looks and innocent smile have turned him into an internet celebrity has sparked a surge in interest in his hometown among tourists. Ctrip, an online travel agency, said that after a video of Tamdrin, a 20-year-old ethnic Tibetan man from Litang county in Sichuan province's Garze Tibetan autonomous prefecture, went viral online last month, the number of searches for Litang soared. 
一个因帅气外表和纯真笑容而在网络走红的年轻人带热了游客们对其家乡的兴趣。上月，四川省甘孜藏族自治州理塘县20岁藏族小伙丁真因一条视频走红，在线旅行社携程的数据显示，丁真家乡理塘的搜索量激增。

On Ctrip's website, searches for Litang started going up on Nov 20. In the week from Nov 23 through Sunday, the search average shot up 620% from the previous week, and was four times greater than during the National Day holiday in October. Tamdrin has now been hired by Litang Culture Tourism and Sport Investment Development Co to promote tourism for the county.
