每年十月的最后一天是美国的万圣节（Halloween）。万圣节起源于欧洲大陆，1840年间传入美国。人们会在这天将南瓜雕成各种造型，装饰自己的房子，并且给自己或者孩子穿上奇怪状的服装，化着恐怖的妆。家长领着孩子，让孩子挨家挨户去“讨糖果”。孩子们会说：Trick or Treat?（不给糖就使坏！）
The Old House on Pine Street
Yesterday was Halloween. I was really excited about it, except for one thing. My friends and I were just a little afraid of that old house on Pine Street. Susan and Emily thought it was haunted. Mike thought it was just an old house. I wasn't quite sure.
My older brother Jack had been to the house last Halloween. When I asked him if it was haunted he just replied. “I'll never tell.”
Kids at school said the house was more than 100 years old and was filled with about 60 ghosts. Kids said they could hear the sounds of howls coming from the house at night.
Susan said we shouldn't even go near it on Halloween. But I wanted to find out whether the house was haunted or not. So I walked slowly up the sidewalk. My knees were shaking. I rang the doorbell but nothing happened. So I began to knock. I knocked louder and louder with each bang of my fist. Finally, the door squeaked open. What did I see? I'll never tell.
昨天是万圣节。我真的很激动，除了一件事。我的朋友们和我都有点害怕松树上的那栋老房子。苏珊和埃米莉认为那栋房子闹鬼。迈克认为那就是栋老房子。我不太确定。
我的哥哥杰克在去年万圣节时去过那栋房子。当我问他房子是不是闹鬼时，他只回答：“我永远不会说的。”
学校的孩子们说那栋房子有一百多年历史了，房子里大约有六十个鬼魂。孩子们说他们在晚上可以听到从房子里传出的嚎哭声。
苏珊说我们不应该在万圣节靠近那栋房子。但是我想查明房子是否闹鬼。所以我慢慢走上人行道。我的膝盖在发抖。我按了门铃，但是没有动静。所以我开始敲门。我的拳头重重地敲打着门，声音越来越大。最后，门吱呀呀地开了。我看到了什么？我永远不会说的。
