Stayhumble at all times

Do you wantto be a writer when you grow up? Do you know of any prizes (奖) for writers?

Reading

There was anAmerican writer who has told the following story many times: The Red Cross inmy city held an art exhibition. I was invited as a special guest to take partin the exhibition. During the event, two girls who were about 13 or 14 yearsold came up to me and asked me for my autograph (亲笔签名). It seemedthat they were fans of mine.

“I haven’t brought my pen. Is a pencil okay?” Actually, I knew they wouldn’trefuse. I just wanted to show that even well-known writers can and should bemodest (谦虚的), especially when speaking with their fans.Neither a pen nor a pencil would make a difference – they were just happy tomeet me.
“Certainly,” the two girls agreed. I could see that they were very excited.Their excitement made me feel glad that they were interested in my work. One ofthe girls handed her notebook to me. I took out my pencil and wrote a few nicewords as well as my name. The girl read my name, frowned (皱眉), looked at me carefully and asked, “Aren’t you RobertaWhite?”
“No,” I told her, “I’m Alice Adams, winner of two Pulitzer Prizes (普利策奖).”
The young girl turned to the other and asked, “Mary, can I borrow your eraser?”
