凯迪和一场很大的雪 Katy and the big snow

Katy was a beautiful red crawler tractor. She was very big and very strong, and she could do a lot of things.
凯迪是一台漂亮的红色的拖拉机。她个头很大，强壮有力，可以做许多事情。
Katy can push dirt around. Katy also can plow snow.
她能将土推走。她能把雪铲开。
Katy belonged to the Highway Department of the City of Geoppolis.
凯迪在吉波利斯市公路局工作。
The Highway Department repaired the roads in the summer and kept them clear of sonw in the winter so traffic could run in and out and around the city.
公路局夏天修路，冬天铲雪，保持道路畅通，让车子可以顺利地进出城市。
All summer Katy worked on the roads. Katy liked to work. The harder and tougher the job, the better she liked it.
整个夏天，凯迪都在道路上工作。她喜欢工作。越费力越有难度的任务她越喜欢。
Once when the steamroller fell in the pond, Katy pulled it out. The Highway Department was very proud of her. They used to say, “Nothing can stop her.”
有一回，蒸汽压路机掉进池塘，凯迪把他拉了出来。公路的人很为她感到骄傲，常常说，“什么也难不倒她！”
Winter came,
冬天来了，
early one morning, it started to drizzle. The drizzle turned into rain. The rain turned into snow. By noon it was four inches deep.
一天， 大清早开始飘起了毛毛雨，慢慢变成小雨，下着下着变成了雪。到中午的时候雪有四寸厚了。
The Highway Department sent out the truck plows. By afternoon, the snow was ten inches deep, and still coming down.
公路局的人开出了铲雪卡车。到下午时雪有十寸厚了，还在不停地下。
“Looks like a big snow.” They said to the Highway Department and sent Katy out.
“看来是场大雪啊！”公路局的人说。这回，他们派出了凯迪。
A strong wind came up, and drifts began to form… one foot… two feet… three feet… five feet… The snow reached the first story windows… the second story windows…and then it stopped.
暴风吹旋着，雪越积越厚。一尺……两尺……三尺……五尺……雪堆到一楼的窗户了……雪堆到二楼的窗户了……终于，雪停了。
One by one the truck snowplows broke down…
铲雪卡车一辆接一辆地不能动了……
The roads were blocked… No traffic could move…
路被封住了……车子没法开了……
The schools, the stores, the factories were closed…
学校、商店和工厂都关门了……
The railroad station and airport were snowed in…
火车站和飞机场被雪覆盖……
The mail couldn’t go through…
邮件送不出去……
The police couldn’t protect the city…
警察不能出来保护城市……
The telephone and power lines were down…
电话线和电线断了……
There was a break in the water main…
总水管裂了……
The doctor couldn’t get his patient to the hospital…
医生没有办法把病人送去医院……
The Fire Department was helpless…
消防队也无计可施……
Everyone and everything was stopped… but… Katy.
所有的人、所有的事都停了下来……除了……凯迪。
The City of Geoppolis was covered with a thick blanket of snow.
吉波利斯市被一条雪白的后毛毯盖住了。
Slowly and steadily, Katy started to plow out the city.
慢慢地，稳稳地，凯迪奋力为城市犁出一条路来。
“Help!” called the Chief of Police. “Help us to get out to protect the city.”
“劳驾！”警察局长喊道。“请协助我们出去保护城市。”
“Sure,” said Katy. “Follow me.” So Katy plowed out the center of the city.
“没问题，”凯迪说，“跟我来。”凯迪在市中心开出了一条路。
“Help,” called out the postmaster. “Help us get the mail through.”
“帮个忙！”邮局局长喊道：“请帮助我们把信送出去。”
“Sure,” said Katy. “Follow me.” So Katy plowed down to the Railway Station.
“没问题，跟我来。”凯迪把路一直开到了火车站。
“Help! Help!” called out the Telephone Company and the Electric Company. “The poles are down somewhere in East Geoppolis.”
“帮帮忙！帮帮忙！”电话公司和电力公司的人喊道。“城东有电线杆倒了。”
“Follow me,” said Katy. So Katy plowed out the road to East Geoppolis.
“跟我来。“凯迪把路开到了城市的东边。
“Help!” called out the Superintendent of the Water Department. “There’s a break in the water main somewhere in North Geoppolis.”
“请帮个忙！“水厂厂长喊道。”城北总水管破裂了。“
“Follow me,” said Katy, and she plowed out the roads to North Geoppolis.
“跟我来。”凯迪说。她把路开到城市的北边。
“Help! Emergency!” called out the doctor. “Help me get the patient to the hospital way out in West Geoppolis.”
“救命！情况紧急！”医生喊道，“请帮我把这人送到城西的医院。”
“Sure,” said Katy. “Follow me.” So Katy plowed out the roads to the hospital.
“没问题，跟我来。” 凯迪把路开到了医院。
“Help! Help! Help!” called out the Fire Chief. “There’s a three alarm fire way out in South Geoppolis.”
“十万火急！十万火急！”消防队长喊道。“城南有三个火警！离这儿很远！”
“Follow me,” said Katy. So Katy plowed out the roads to the fire in South Geoppolis.
“跟我来！”凯迪把路开到城市南边着火的地方。
On the way back a plane signaled for help. The airport was snowed in.
回来的路上一架飞机打信号求助，是机场被雪封住了。
Katy was beginning to get a little tired but she wouldn’t stop… not Katy.
凯迪感到有点累了，但她不会停下来的……这不是凯迪的作风。
She hurried over to the airport and plowed out the runways so the airplane could land safely.
她赶去机场把跑道清理出来。飞机可以安全降落了。
Then after she had found the broken-down track plows, she started home.
把那些不能动的铲雪车一辆一辆救出来后，她开始往回走。
The Fire Department had put out the fire. The doctor had saved his patient. The Water Department had repaired the main. The telephone and electricity were on. The mail could go through.
消防队扑灭了火，医生抢救了病人，水厂工人修好了水管，电和电话接通了，邮件送出去了,
And the police could protect the city. Thanks to what Katy did…
警察可以保护城市了。这一切都多亏了凯迪……
Katy finished up the side streets so traffic move in and out and around the city.
凯迪把周边小路的雪也清理干净，让所有道路通畅，车子可以顺利地进出城市。
Then she went home to rest. Then… and only then did Katy stop.
全部工作都完成了，凯迪愉快地回到公路局。直到这时，她才打算停下来好好休息。
