Things Are Not Always Black or White
[00:13.32]When I was in elementary school,
[00:17.25]I got into a major argument with a boy in my class.
[00:21.23]I have forgotten what the argument was about,
[00:24.19]but I have never forgotten the lesson I learned that day.
[00:27.88]I was convinced that I was right and he was wrong
[00:31.37]and he was just as convinced that I was wrong and he was right.
[00:35.90]The teacher decided to teach us a very important lesson.
[00:40.00]She brought us up to the front of the class,
[00:42.91]placing him on one side of her desk and me on the other.
[00:46.47]In the middle of her desk was a large, round object.
[00:50.34]I could clearly see that it was black.
[00:53.27]And she asked the boy what color the object was,
[00:56.73]White, he answered.
[00:58.98]I couldn't believe he said the object was white,
[01:02.18]when it was obviously black! Another argument started
[01:06.76]between my classmate and me,
[01:08.72]this time about the color of the object.
[01:11.68]The teacher told me to go stand where the boy was standing
[01:15.71]and told him to come and stand where I had been.
[01:19.16]We changed places,
[01:21.10]and now she asked me what the color of the object was.
[01:24.39]I had to answer,
[01:26.44]White. It was an object with two differently colored sides,
[01:30.75]and from his viewpoint it was white.
[01:33.24]Only from my side it was black.
[01:36.22]My teacher taught me a very important lesson that day:
[01:39.30]You must stand in the other person's shoes
[01:42.29]and look at the situation through their eyes
[01:45.33]in order to truly understand their perspective.
