Now the important trial began. Portia looked around her and saw the merciless usurer.Then she saw Bassanio,but he did not recognize her.He was standing beside Antonio,in an agony of distress for his friend.
Portia boldly proceeded to defend Antonio.First,she addressed herself to Shylock.She then agreed that Shylock had a right by the Venetian law to have the forfeit expressed in the bond.Next,she spoke as sweetly of the noble quality of mercy as would have softened any heart but thecold-hearted Shylock's.
“Mercy drops as the gentle rain from heaven upon the place beneath.”she said."Mercy is a double blessing,for it blesses him that gives it and him that receives it. It is an attribute of God Himself.Please remember,good sir,that as we all pray for mercy,that same prayer should teach us to show mercy to others."
“To hell with mercy!”Shylock said.“AlI I want is have the penalty forfeited in the bond.”
“But he can pay you now.Won＇t you take the money?＂asked Portia.
Bassanio then offered Shylock the payment of the three thousand ducats as many times over as he wishes.Shylock again refused,and insisted on having a pound of Antonio’s flesh.
“Sir,would you let me look at the bond?"
Portia asked Shylock.＂Gladly.＂replied Shylock.“This bond is forfeited.”Portia said after carefully reading the bond.“And by this，the Jew may lawfully claim a pound of flesh，to be cut off nearest to Antonio’s heart,as he wishes."Then she turned to Shylock and said，“Be merciful. Take the money and let me tear up the bond.＂
