With the self-same winds that blow;

’Tis the set of the sails

And not the gales

That tell them the way to go.

诗歌及作者简介

威尔考克斯(Ella Wheeler Wilcox,1850-1919)，美国著名作家和诗人，她的诗歌清新自然、韵律精美，很多诗歌广为流传；她的13首作品被选入《最受喜爱的美国诗歌选集》。《最美英文诗篇》第5篇《Solitude（孤独）》也是她的作品。

在这首短诗中，作者说，吹向我们的都是一样的风，但是有人抵达了港口，有人随风飘零；这跟命运类似，一样的无法左右命运，但是有人一步步迈向人生圆满，有人迷失了自己。这里面，最应该责怪的，不是风向，也不是命运，而是我们面对人生挑战时的理解方式和应对之策。

也就是说：

- It’s what's in your head that determines your future, not what's outside it.

- It’s the set of the sails (the direction you choose for your life), but not the gales (things that happen in your life) that will decide where you end up.

- It’s your soul (the ambition you choose to have) that decides its goal (the purpose of your life).
