Warm-up Question: What should you do during a fire?
The coal in her pocket catches fire.Then, Nan gets free and runs away. Everyone thinks she died in the fire. To getaway from Crudd, she hides in an old building.
Soon, something strange happens. Her special piece of coal starts moving. It’s alive! The chimney fire brought the coal to life, and it saved Nan’s life. Soon the coal grows big and learns to talk. Nan names the coal monster “Charlie.” She learns about this kind of monster from a book. It’s a golem: a monster from Jewish legends. A golem’s job is to keep someone safe. After it does its job, it will die.
