Warm-up Question: What kinds of food do you buy at convenience stores?
People in Taiwan buy snacks and drinks at convenience stores every day. However, the convenience of fresh food all the time comes at a cost. Taiwanese convenience stores throw out 500 tons of food each month! Around 80-90% of this is perishable food.
Part of the reason for this problem is Taiwan’s food laws. After fresh food expires, stores must throw it away.Selling or giving it away would be breaking the law. It’s also hard for stores to know whether some products will sell. So, they end up buying too many. To some food companies and stores, wasting products is better than empty shelves.
