Text 1

W: The game is so exciting. By the way, what is the time now?

M: It’s 3:40 p. m. Only 20 minutes left before it’s finished.

Text 2

W: Where did you get the book, George? Did your brother Tom get it?

M: No, Deborah lent it to me. Everyone wants to read it. I have to give it to Hannah when I finish reading it.

Text 3

M: Ms. Green, I am afraid if your son keeps annoying other students in class, I’ll have to ask you to find another school for him.

W: I’m so sorry, Mr. Peterson. I promise I’ll teach him to behave.

Text 4

M: I have finished my report, but the printer is broken. What should I do?

W: Save the file on a U-disk first and bring it to my home. You can use my printer.

M: That’s a great idea.

Text 5

M: Wow, I like the color of the walls. Why did you decide on purple?

W: I was inspired by a movie I saw last month.

M: I think you should get a new carpet. This one doesn’t match any other thing in the room.

Text 6

W: Henry, look at this old mirror with a wooden stand. It must be a few hundred years old.

M: Yes. But I don’t think it’ll fit our bedroom.

W: I am thinking we can buy it for your mother. Doesn’t she like old things?

M: That sounds like a good idea. So how much does it cost?

W: Just 60 dollars. But we’ll have to pay 20 dollars for delivery if the product costs less than 200 dollars.

M: Well, I think it’s really worth the cost. I’m sure Mom will love it. Let’s get it for her as a surprise.

W: OK. And now let’s keep looking for a table for our dining room.

M: OK.

Text 7

W: Sir, how can I get information of my desirable school through the Internet?

M: The information that you get from the Internet is too general. I suggest you call them personally after looking at the web page for the departments you like.

W: I see, even talk to the graduate students.

M: Right. The graduate students always have a good command of that information.

W: But if I visit the school, what should I do?

M: Be sure to ask these questions such as which professor is still active, who are good advisors, how many times can you get tutored specially a term, etc.

W: I see. Thank you.

Text 8

W: Mike, how is work?

M: Not so good. I often face challenges at work that I find very hard to handle. I really regret not having gone to college.

W: Why not try a trusted platform for online education? You can find a lot of college-level courses on the Internet.

M: Could you recommend such a platform?

W: Certainly. You can give edX a shot. It’s founded by Harvard and MIT. The courses are created and taught by professors from top universities.

M: That’s great. Are the courses free?

W: No, but they are definitely much cheaper than an actual college course. You can also achieve a certificate when you complete them.

M: Are the courses pre-recorded?

W: Yes. Users can learn at their own pace. However, all assignments are due when the course ends.

M: Well, I’ll certainly give it a try. I do want to be more learned and gain some useful skills through some online courses.

Text 9

W: Mike, are you going to the fair the day after tomorrow?

M: What fair?

W: The annual fair that Riverdale puts on the first Saturday in June to raise money for the Riverdale Hospital. The fair is going to be held in the park this year. Haven’t you noticed the tents that have already been put up?

M: Yes, I have. What are they for?

W: They are for special events and displays. I’m going to help serve food at the food tent on Saturday afternoon.

M: Sounds good. Ah, I hear the local bands will give a performance. Is that part of the fair?

W: Well, that will be at the entertainment tent, but that event will be on Friday evening before the fair starts. The fair starts with a big charity event on Saturday morning and there will be some real treasures for sale then. There will be an art show on Saturday afternoon and a special game tent just for children.

M: And all the profits from the fair go to support the hospital? What a good idea!

Text 10

W: Are you a pet owner? A study shows that British people with dogs or cats would like to turn on the radio or the TV while they’re away from home for their pets. They want to make the pets feel less lonely. But do your pets like this?

Sometimes dogs respond to human music. The study found that classical music appeared to have a calming effect on the dogs. Some of them chose to simply lie down to listen to it. Meanwhile, music by the heavy metal band seemed to excite the dogs. Finally, pop music, much like the sounds of human conversations, appeared to have no effect on them.

For cats, they hardly respond to human music because their hearing range is different from that of humans. So what they hear when they listen to our music is different from what we hear. Scientists once tried to see what would happen if they played "cat music" for the cats. They asked the musician David Teie to make special music for cats. And, it turns out, when playing this music to 47 cats in the study compared to playing two different classical music pieces, the cats paid more attention to the cat music.

Good news for cat lovers is that they can buy special cat music online. David Teie created cat music for sale online.
