Eating more raw fruit and vegetables can help ease depression and other mental illness, according to experts from the University of Otago in New Zealand. 

新西兰奥塔戈大学研究人员发现，多吃生鲜果蔬可有助于缓解抑郁症和其他心理疾病。

More than 400 people aged between 18 and 24 from New Zealand and the US were surveyed for the research. 

400多名18至24岁、来自新西兰和美国的年轻人接受了这项研究的调查。

The result shows that raw fruit and vegetable consumption predicted lower levels of mental illness symptomology, such as depression, and improved levels of psychological well-being including positive mood and life satisfaction.

结果显示，摄入生鲜果蔬能使抑郁等心理疾病症候学程度更轻，还能改善正面情绪和生活满意度等心理健康水平。

"Our research has highlighted that the consumption of fruit and vegetables in their 'unmodified' state is more strongly associated with better mental health compared to cooked/canned/processed fruit and vegetables," lead author Kate Brookie said. 

该研究首席作者凯特·布鲁克称，他们的研究强调，与经过烹饪、罐装、加工的蔬果相比，食用状态"未经改变的"蔬果与更佳的心理健康联系得更为紧密。

In addition, experts also say people should be focusing more on the types of fruit and veg they eat rather than the quantity.

此外，专家还表示人们应该更注重食用果蔬的种类而非数量。

The best foods to eat include carrots, bananas, apples, fresh berries, cucumber, kiwifruit, dark leafy greens and citrus fruits. 

最适于食用的蔬果包括胡萝卜、香蕉、苹果、新鲜浆果、黄瓜、猕猴桃、深色绿叶菜和柑橘类水果。

Research suggests there's a good scientific reason why some of us struggle to look someone in the eye and hold a conversation with them. 

研究人员认为，之所以我们有些人在和别人交谈时很难直视对方的眼睛，是有充分的科学依据的。

It turns out we're not just awkward, our brains actually can't handle the tasks of thinking of the right words and focusing on a face at the same time. 

事实上我们并不只是尴尬，而是大脑无法同时兼顾"思考恰当词汇"和"将注意力集中在面部"这两项任务。

The effect becomes more noticeable when someone is trying to come up with less familiar words, which is thought to use the same mental resources as sustaining eye contact. 

当人们试图想出不太熟悉的词汇时，这个效应会更加明显。研究人员认为，这与维持目光接触占用了相同的心理资源。

So next time if someone looks away while they're talking to you, they might not be being rude – they could just have an overloaded cognitive system.

Machine to clean ocean mess

Scientists are preparing to launch the world's first machine to clean up the planet's largest mass of ocean plastic. 

科学家们正准备启用世界上首台机器清理地球上最大的海洋塑料垃圾堆。

The system will be shipped out this summer to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, between Hawaii and California, and which contains an estimated 1.8 trillion pieces of plastic. 

该清理系统将在今年夏天被运往"大太平洋垃圾带"。大太平洋垃圾带位于美国夏威夷和加利福尼亚之间，估计上面有1.8万亿片塑料。

It will be the first ever attempt to tackle the patch since it was discovered in 1997.

The experts believe the machine should be able to collect half of the detritus in the patch – about 40,000 metric tons – within five years.

Hundreds of people have commented on the funny clip, applauded the photographer for going above and beyond the call of duty.

"When you wanted to become Spider-Man to fight crime but ended up becoming wedding photographer due to parental pressure," a Twitter user joked.
